Working srt line

This has probably been discussed in multiple threads however I was wondering what everyone is using for srt working line (not just access) . Been using velocity and xtc 16 strand and just recently htp 10mm all with Wooden rope wrenches and ice in a vt. Velocity is my fav out of the three.

I can see the point of view that using a static Line to work position with could cause more of a Potential for a slip and minor shock load but then again many of the newer arborist line have almost as little stretch in them. I think blue moon has 1.8% stretch and htp has 1.3% at 300 lbs or something similar. When you put the numbers up it seems like a moot point.

I'm pretty sure that 7/16" KMIII on SRT has more stretch than 'most' 7/16 and 1/2" lines on DdRT.

That said...I like having a bit more stretch tucked away in the rope...just in case!

The only time that I ever really encounter stretch in SRT is if I have a TIP up around 80-90', which isn't often.

Tachyon covers everything for me.

Looking at the math, I cant see an argument against static ropes based on less shock absorbancy. The key here being that a dDRT system has half the stretch of a SRT system. More or less depending on how much rope in the system. An SRT system with a lot of redirects gains a lot of stretch from the tree. Compounding stretch

KEEP SLACK OUT THE SYSTEM

Shock absorbancy in SRT climbing is not one of the problems that I have come across. Climbing on a too stretchy line is no fun. 16 strand is almost intolerably stretchy. Ascenders work much better on a static stiffer line. The pantin falls through the line much easier for example.

The recent SRT article in TCIA had some interesting points that All nylon static rope was the ONLY rope that met EN standards for use with ascenders while double braid arborist lines routinely had their sheaths completely severed.

The article hints at Static line as being a safer alternative when using ascenders but also says its NOT ANSI approved because it is all nylon rope. confusing.

I personally don't like the feel of the Static lines in my hand. I don't like how they tie knots and I find them abrasive and stiff. I prefer my rope to be supple and manageable. Friendly. I like tachyon but it definitely is on the bouncy side. Fly is way too bouncy as is blaze. Velocity and blaze are too small for my hands as is the thinner KM 3.

I like the 1/2 stable braid sold as a rigging line for climbing. a little too heavy though.

I keep on coming back to Poison Ivy. I tried ranger dangers rocket line and found it appealing and ROUND. I have High hopes for the IMORI

poison IVY 1.8% at 540

HTP .63% at 540

1/2
stable braid 1.2% @ 540

Tachyon 2.4% @ 540

blue moon 1.8%

blaze 2.2
fly 2.2

velocity 2.2 @ 600 I calculate 2% at 540.

IMORI is Very stiff it is listed at

1.6% at 650 (that is 10% of breaking strength). I believe that translates to

1.3% at 540

New england KM III I dont understand the conversion but it is

3.6 @ 300 pound feet (1.35 kN) for the 3/8ths and 2.9 and 2.7 for the 7/16ths and 1/2 inch lines respectively. I cant do the conversion process and do not really know how that translates from 300 pound feet to 540 pounds. Help?

Imori used in dDRT would have .65% stretch at 540. about the same as HTP in SRT.

The most common place for hard falls would be around the tie in point climbing above your last protection. In dDRT This could be a factor 2 fall. very serious. With a base tied SRT system you have a lot more rope in the system. which is a good thing but,

Either way, Do not allow Slack in your system and you'll be okay.

did they change the imori? because i have one of the early ones when it was just released and i dont like to climb on it because it is so stretchy

Waldo and all,

I also have an imori line and it has a lot of stretch. I didnt know that they made two different ones until a week ago.

I have been working on srt with the sweet wrench for about a month total. I really like srt and finally got a good set up going.

With the imori i also noticed i can glaze it easily too.

Overall it does seem mighty stretchy but would like to see what you come up with Kevin with a newer one.

I never got to see how much elongation there was on the rope when i bought it so i have to live with it for a while.

Thanks,

I have used poison ivy for quite a while DRT and have been doing more SRT recently. I have found that of the two ropes used, Tachyon and poison ivy, I much prefer the poison ivy. I find the Tachyon has way to much stretch or bounce as you ascend, of course this may be because most of the TIPS have been 60-80'. I also feel the toothed ascenders are pretty abusive on the ropes, especially my poison ivy, so I am considering revisting DRT off SRT and using/trying the sterling line as the srt. of course that again adds the transition step unless I use my drt hitch from the beginning of the ascent on the srt. Guess I just have to keep trying and find out what is best for each situation. have to admit I really like the wrench and vt with 8mm beeline on the poison ivy.

Anyone else tried the imori line for stretch. I just cut my KMIII and need a new rope for the wrench. Might go with rocket line maybe KMIII again. This indecision is killing me.

Yep, I have the orange and black imori and wrench on it sometimes. It's just fine. Just like tachyon, both are fine. I think my favorite is 10mm HTP, however. Like climbing on a tiny stick.

I bet if you like the KMIII, you would love HTP 10mm, either red or green, both are pretty highly visible, so less likely to be cut.

Imori is nice too, but if you are a wrencher like I am (wrench whenever I can), I bet you prefer the most static you can get.

Thanks again Bing!

I've been using the wrench on htp for a while now and I like the lack of stretch, but I can't find a prussic set up that work constantly well with it. So I'm changing to a little larger diameter rope.

Very funny Jimmy. Jackson caused the cut actually by dragging my rope from the ground into the path of the saw. Sucks because static are nice worn in. I will try out the rocket line tomorrow but I feel you Winch, once you get used to static everything else is like a rubber band.
I am pretty sure I will be picking Tom up on his offer for hos used KMIII

Jeremy, I agree on static line being inconsistent in it's relationship with hitch cord. When my prusic is new I tie a vtx and eventually switch to a traditional vt
