work safe BC video

I've watched the vid a dozen times looking for a solution from the ground. It appears there was only one place to stand and make a cut. Escape routes don't really count when the tree is loaded from multi directions. A good climber or dynamite is all I can see. A dynamite climber even.

We are all SWAG ing here. No one knows for certain how much pressure that log was under. One thing that is certain, it was sufficient to crush a man. Ascertaining the gross level of pressure is critical. Being a master at diffusing that pressure is also critical. I know that often we cut without considering those pressures or how they are going to be released. Other times we get a surprise because we didn't see something. Either way, it would be our fault for cutting the fiber.

Helicopter - maybe, but I doubt it. I have no clue about how much lift they can provide. A neat idea for certain.

We have lots of alternatives to dynamite. Cutting techniques go a long, long way in diffusing pressure. I don't think it is such a good idea to start passing out explosives to tree guys :|.

There are several fallers on the coast and island (from the best of my knowledge, but Gord would probably know better) who are licensed to use explosives to deal with trees to hazardous to put a saw to.

Hot damn now that's a cert to get. Most certainly on my bucket list.

I would think attempting to pull that out with a helicopter would be seriously dangerous. Imagine the inertia and friction in that situation. Once that released in could send the chopper shooting upwards way too fast.

Maybe the tree could have been handled safely with a different cut, BUT IMO the faller misread what was going to happen after the cut was made. If he had read it properly he wouldn't have cut it there, and/or he would have changed position..

Why not just tie off and make two cuts with two different tips one cut to remove the root ball. Second cut at the pivot point standing in the hooks behind the pivot point?

Good video.

I haven't read the other responses, looks to me he did not forsee the heavy root ball wanting to roll down the hill.

If the first cut would have been at the root ball and he stood uphill from it, all would have been fine. It would have rolled downhill as he cut, worse case pinch the bar if he wasn't quick to pull it out.

Shame.

#1 Lash or secure with ropes if its unpredictable.
#2 Pwr pole saw to finish a cut or release the strap
#3 brace or block to support the timbers

We all take short cuts and when its your time to measure risk versus reward I hope you take all the time necessary to walk away unharmed.
