Hell yeah! Way to take soil off that rootball and find the flare!!!

Wasn’t super happy because we dug the hole set the tree and started taking the basket and burlap off. We had to pull the tree with nothing around the ball. Homeowner didn’t have the hose on or I would have pulled an Appleton bare root planting. It turned out good though. The extra time was well worth the outcome.

This was what it was replacing. Wire basket all the way to the top traces of burlap and 6” deep. Stone dead. Didn’t even stand a chance. Could have almost pulled it out by hand but the machine was right there.

Deleted 4-5 parking spaces, 4-6” COMPACTED gravel within 4-5’ of the trunk. Radial trenching (24-28” wide and 18” deep). Shorter trenches between the main. Blasted all the crushed rock (with fines or binder) between the trenches mixing with 2-3” of the soil below. Amended with a few yards of mushy compost. Ripped the large log in half for parking barrier. Scary thing is it’s been dumping down rain with landslides all last week/early this week, but it was almost bone dry under this tree.

Light reduction/thinning/raise on the lower laterals, deadwood 5-6” diameter. A few hangers. Opted to bail and come back later for larger reduction cuts 3-5” as it’s just now pushing out leaves. 219018D1-1450-4CCF-B0E3-179559B226DD.webp1BD2DD68-6ADF-4D3D-AB0C-7F15033EAF0B.webp

Ugh...sounds like dreadful soil work.

Today’s planting project! Well transplanting! We got it out of the ground today and will be planting in it’s new home in 3-4 weeks.

The 12’’ auger worked great breaking up the soil so it was easier to dig we would auger down, stop and pull the core out and spin it off on mats near by.BA41EE44-37F4-4F2E-B186-83CD40532FA8.webp
But of course there was no shortage of shovel work.

Split 2 60” baskets, over lapped them and wound them together with the split ends. Used the basket hook once tied off to tighten the basket. 82B3C187-15D1-41E5-94E6-5B3539C683D9.webp

Did you root prune it last season?
Negative. We were asked in February if it could be moved. It has only been in this spot for 18 years according to the owner. I was super surprised that the roots on the whole north side were minor and only fine absorbing roots. On the south side we actually found a pretty dense cluster of 1/2” - 3/4” roots. We actually considered taking another foot of root ball off before we wrapped it. But ended up wrapping it at 60”. In hindsight after lifting it we should have taken that foot.

Hope you guys don't mind seeing my non tree related work photos...

I'm the company mechanic but the problem with being a good mechanic for a small company is some times you fix all the shit and have to come up with stuff to do till someone breaks something else or a contract wrenching job comes in.
My best buddy is a crew leader / foreman so I go work with him at his jobsite (we work for the same company).

Sisters(wheel loader is a 242d, track loader is a brand spanking new 239d with 28 hours that was pissing out hydro fluid from the left drive motor so bad I had to pick it up and carry it back cause it couldn't even move under its own power). Ignore the 300.9c, it's shit.

This is the job Eddie's crew is on now. Laborers doing their typical activities: Dave standing around, Zack trying to look busy with the blower but not actually accomplishing shit.

And this is the biggest tree I've ever saw around here (here being the whole freaking state), found it on lunch last Friday and had to walk over to see it.
