Wow. I stared at some alnus photos and couldn't find one that resembled yours. Funny how they can take on so many forms.

I also researched the golf club thing and came up with persimmon, too, but same results with images & illustrations, couldn't find a match.

I'm interested to see if that one is a changeling, too.

All the persimmons that I work with have buds like in the photo.
They remind me of deer hoofs (hooves) -

Perhaps the difference you are noting has more to do with what time in bud development the photo was taken ??

Clues:
It's very small but still considered a tree. Possibly as small as big bonsai's. Native to N.America. Understory forest settings.

Giveaway:
You can tie the twigs in a knot.
