Windy days

Today I removed a topped out, nasty and narly silver maple with somewhat high winds and it got me thinking. When you are climbing in heavy winds, what extra precaustions do you take and why?

I don't to too much different. I always make sure to use my lanyard while cutting (I should be doing that anyway) so that when my TIP sways in the wind I'm not rocking too badly. I always tie in a little lower then usual (probably doesn't help much but I'm a weird dude) and I throw a tag line on just about everything I rig.

What do you do differently? Why?

I do a lot of the same stuff you talk about. If I can, before I make a cut, I try to let the wind die down a bit, and do the cut between gusts (if I'm letting the piece free fall) Not much I can say after that. I haven't worked in too many high wind situations before, so I don't have a lot of experience.

You call that little breeze we had today high winds? Only thing to do diff is cut with the wind, tring to get something to fall into the wind is just silly. Plus you'll more than likly end up getting it in your lap.

It's not that bad that there isn't any foliage on the trees, except most evergreens. Today we did a dying maple tree and then the phone started ringing with downed trees. Did what we could til a little after dark. Biggest thing I hate is the saw dust getting up under my glasses. Its seems the winds blows in every direction I'm trying to get away from it.

I break out my ski goggles instead of safety glasses, keeping the saw dust out of your eyes is a challenge on a day like today. You can't cut what you can't see.

Ed, anytime I see a stainless steel bbq get blown across the backyard I tend to think it's a bit windy out. I know what ya mean by having it come back on your lap. Consider that lesson learned as of last year. I probably still have a bruise. When I made my mouth and started my back cut the wind took the limb opposite way and it ended up giving me a bit of a turtle tapper. Luckily the limb wasn't too big. That's what I get for trying to "time the wind"

Cam. I know what ya mean. After lunch I went up without my glasses and made one cut and I'm still flushing out my eye. I wonder if those huge face sheild things are any better? I'm positive I won't lose it nearly as much as I do my glasses. You've gotta be swamped with calls by now. Shoot even I got two calls and I don't advertise nor do I have my old biz line. Good luck out there tomorrow man.

"playing" the wind to me generally means after getting to position to cut , observe the gusts .... try to execute cutting / falling work in the calmer moments .... obviously the backcuts being most critical .... try not to fall into the steady winds as well ... good luck ...

OK for the sake of arguement, what are we gonna call windy? 20MPH 30MPH???

We'll say windy is 50 and over, that's when they put trailer warnings out for the drivers.

It was rugged out there today. I was removing large deadwood from a good size oak this morning a little south of the East Falls section of Philadelphia. Gusts up to 55 mph? I'll tell ya what I did differently. Throw lines were getting all fouled up. The storage cubes were blowing around the property. Once in the canopy I had a hard time setting another line for a second climber. I couldn't find my handsaw scabbard in its usual spot. Things were blowing around like crazy. It was all quite comical. Looks like storm damage to round out the week.

Deadwooded a white oak this morning. The only thing keeping me warm was the crap in my pants. Swaying 10' side to side 75' up wasn't to comfortable.

HaHa. Yeah it got pretty windy

Get this. I get home around 5pm and take a stroll around my house. I've got a few big trees around. Out back a 60 ft. spruce's root system is shifting around in the ground. Oh yeah, it's leaning toward the neighbor's yard. The only thing I could think for the night was to toss a throw line up, thread a rope up , secure it to the base and then tie the other end off to the base of another nearby tree. If it goes over there's no way it could go near the neighbor's house, right? The high wind advisory was supposed to be over at 7 pm. If the thing's still standing tomorrow morning I guess I'll be taking it down over the weekend. Man, it's just been that kind of day.

yeah hutch it was windy as hell here today to its gonna be storm damage for awhile. just out of curosity is that a treemotion saddle? if so how do you like it?
