why does most

pretty sure you could ask this question about almost any trade / job if you get to know enough people within that industry
Right. Plenty of drugs out there and plenty of people doing them. Just more noticeable in an industry where accidents are as common as in the tree workers industry. Drugs for some can be helpful in the "going well" situation but... in the not going well situation, well...

How many of you have done just the right thing to avoid a bad car accident? Probably everyone. Sober your hero. Drugged it's an intervention if you pull it out. At height just kiss it goodbye.

One prospective employer didn't believe I was a tree climber because 1) I wasn't a druggie, 2) an alcoholic, 3) an ex-con. This has been a job is the past where your ability and willingness to take the risk outweighed all those thinks and the likelihood was you've led a hard life. Now many of us do take some sort of pain meds on a regular basis. Unlike other paid athletes we can't afford a host of doctors and therapists to keep us healthy and painfree.

TL, was saying, simply my life's observation, is that no matter what the job, there are probably more people than one would think who are under the influence of something unprescribed doing their job.
question being why does it seem like so many tree climbers do drugs

one young man I worked with recently said his former boss would nod off in the tree! and he always had to get paid before the boss left the job, or the boss would spend all his cash on drugs... Guess it depends on where you look. I know f one company locally that has only one or two employees (out of 40) that smoke cigarettes... I don't drink, drug or take anything over the counter... seen a lot of wasted life and talent... seems like the young guys these days have more brain damage than usual. One crew worked three months and couldn't figure out how to rake a lawn... I wonder if its the drugs these kids are doing being different than the drugs of the 70's-80's... its a little scary that there are so many that are so spaced out.

There are a lot of prescription pain killers and mood-altering drugs in play as well. In my opinion, WAY TOO MANY prescriptions. Daniel, this may play a factor in what you're witnessing as well.

People have always numbed themselves, it's nothing new. As long as people's extra curriculars don't effect safety or productivity. I do not care what they do in there own time.

Agreed, what they do on their time is fine with me, unless it affects them while on my time. I have serious issues with that.

Never had someone show up stoned or drunk. Hungover is a different story, though. Several have arrived half-dead and incapable of being fully attentive. As far as I'm concerned their off duty activities crossed over into their on-duty responsibilities. They were sent home with a warning that a repeat performance would not get them an invite back.

Yep, show up without a clear head and you can go right back home or wherever you crawled out of. There have been cases of drug or alcohol use on the job, "just to take the edge off" or put it back on! Not on my watch….
