Hey Mark C. Is that Shmiddy's rig? If so, great guy and ever better operator. I can't believe they travel that far south.

Yeah that is Smitty (sp?). He is such a pro. We did a crane workshop together in Boston a year or two ago and one guy commented that it might have been more educational if we had used a different operator since Smitty is just that good and we hardly communicate. Plus he's a good friend of the Family.

Dan:

I have been looking for a grab truck the past week or two, looking for the one I want. I might end up building it...

Does that answer your question? Recently the company has became a pain to work with, such is life when you have a monopoly.

Yes that answers my question. I doubt they are use to getting those large chunks of wood!

The driver allegedly had one roll from Mondays job and they are wanting me to pay $650 bucks to repair the box.

In recent months service has gone down, price has gone up, now this....

In dumping/hauling fees so far this physical year I could have paid around half what I am planning to spend on the truck. Then add saved labor, subtract fuel and such.... I prefer not having to depend on anyone, especially when they are a monopoly that tries to take advantage. They said no more boxes until they had the $650 in hand. I told them they could bill it, I couldn't get them a check that day, the box needed to be delivered the next day... This is while my bill from Monday well exceeds $650 bucks... any who, they delivered yesterdays box, perhaps the last time I fool with them. :)

Oh, did I mention the same driver that had the piece roll inside the box (still the drivers responsibility) backed into a houses roof Monday? He didn't report it till Thursday. Real credible guy.

I wouldn't pay. Why is it your responsibility to secure the load? You are paying them to do that. You are only supposed to fill it. What a great bunch. /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I'd say buy one when you can. The roll off co. I know dumps the wood where I dump. My big truck is less than $250.00 to dump it (unless there's stumps) and the roll-off is $550.00. That's $300.00, minus fuel, but add in the ability to load the wood without a crane on site and you can make the payment up in 1 week of use per month. I use our log trucks everyday. Sometimes I take both to one site. I say go for it!

No worries Mark, I have been looking for the truck, or looking into building the truck I want. Not sure if I will, but I might throw a hook lift on the back of it for some versatility.

The truck I am looking for is a INT 4900 33k gvw (or higher if one happens to pop up with a heavier front axle) with a knuckle boom (perferably a hiab/palfinger/effer over a prentice) and a dump... The chances of me finding that are remote, so I am looking into building the truck.

The reason for the single axle is this truck willd drive across many lawns, figure with a single rear axle the customer would be more inclined to allow it. I dont believe pusher axles are recognized by my state... bummer.

Edit to add: The box didnt roll, a piece inside the box rolled.

There's a truck for sale by me that is an int 4900 or similar? that has a Cormach 35' boom on it and a removable chip top. I was looking at it for me, but maybe it suits you? It is selling for $89K, but I know they want it moved! Brand new too.

Why not get you a fly boom Mark /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif? Would make you loads more money eh? Of course you know best...

Right now for me I am planning on a used chassis, unsure about the boom and bed, the boom may be used, the bed will probably have to be new to get what I want.

Going to test the waters before I jump in for $90k's worth. Still looking for more help also, finding the right person is like finding the right truck. :)

Onething to remember when buying larger trucks new is the 12% federal tax on them plus any local tax. At $90000 that is another 10K
