which organ do I have

Trev,

That's something I'm working on. I want to get the details inorder before we start the "official" thing, but it would be added to anyone who makes a donation to help find a cure for cancer through Tree Buzz. Right now it doesn't actually work 100% so hold off if you are interested. I will make a post when we are ready.

I've been wanting to do something like this for many years, so here we go.

Mark;

Supporting a favorite charity like the Cancer Society is leaving quite an impression on me. I find it to be quite a surprise you would use this site for such a purpose. My hat comes off for you, sir. /forum/images/graemlins/applaudit.gif

Thanks Joe.

The way I feel is "why not"? I won't make it difficult for members to do and I will make it available to all. I will also make it publically know how much we are raising and who is taking part.

This is not very simple to structure, but after a phone conversation today with the Lance Armstrong Foundation, I am very positive that I can make this work. I will talk more about this when I finalize the concept with our web people.

It will be a very good thing to do! /forum/images/graemlins/coolsun.gif

It really feels good to donate to a cause on behalf of Mark and Treebuzz, although I am not a big fan of Armstrong's personality. A worthy cause I'm sure.

In fact, since I am such a tight wad, this is the first notable donation I have ever made online.

I hope it goes to making a difference.

Re: live strong project

hey mark,
i think it's very cool that you're using your high profile in this community and treebuzz to raise money for a worthy cause. i'd like to contribute but i was wondering if you know what percentage of each $ goes to actual research/education/etc. i know the yellow wristbands are something unreal like 99%, but before i get out my credit card i was hoping to find out where the money will go. some big organizations use quite a bit of donation money to pay phone bills and so forth, which i know needs to be covered as well...
just curious.
thanks,
k.

Re: live strong project

Hi Kathy,

That is a great question. That is very perceptive as well. Many so called charities are run by boards that increase their salaries by 200% every year until people catch on. The "wear yellow campaign" is very unique (99%) because Nike sponsors that. I was concerned about this as well and here's the info:

What percent of the funds raised are allocated towards the mission?
Eighty percent of the funds raised for the LAF go directly towards our mission activities. Click here to find a detailed description of the LAF mission activities and programs.

Here's their mission statement:

The Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) believes that in your battle with cancer, knowledge is power and attitude is everything. Founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and cycling champion Lance Armstrong, the LAF provides the practical information and tools people living with cancer need to live strong. We serve our mission through four core program areas:

Education - The LAF informs cancer patients, health care professionals and the public about the physical, emotional and practical issues that people face in their battle with cancer. We provide the information and resources people need to live strong.

Advocacy - The LAF represents people living with cancer on Capitol Hill. We are increasing awareness, encouraging the government to take action, and addressing the health policy concerns of people battling cancer and their families.

Public Health - The LAF plans, develops and funds programs that provide after-treatment support and services for people living with cancer and their families.

Research - The LAF supports scientific and clinical research that seeks to better understand cancer's physical, emotional and practical effects and the challenge of living with the disease.

Today there are nearly 10 million people living with cancer. Through these four program areas, LAF provides the practical information and tools that people need to battle cancer and live strong (and climb strong!). (I added that /forum/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

I should also add that each supporter will get a tax form since this is a charitable donation. And for the skeptics, TreeBuzz gets 0% of all donations and no tax break, but we get so much more /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif!

Re: live strong project

thanks mark, that's good information. i was pretty sure lance wouldn't attach his name so publicly to anything sketchy in any way, but that 80% number is what i was looking for. i don't give much money away, so i don't know where that stands in relation to bigger charities but it's good enough for me.

my partner runs a professional modern dance studio that's nonprofit and tells a story about some poor dancer who tried to use a matching donation program through their job (@ United Way!) to give her studio $25 - the studio, after uw's fees, got an invoice for $10 rather than a donation. crazy.
