Is that your crew? I'd like to see ya'll work together, probably a thing of beauty.

Re: re: jamoco

Those are not Tom's crew Bix, that's some folks in Mexico that Tom so kindly have shown how to do tree work ( they were doing it before I think ) using better Safety Protocol, with proper PPE, progressive equipment and techniques.....

Re: re: jamoco

Ah very nice Swing, good to spread the word. Looks like one happy bunch. I try and take a siesta on those long summer days, lay down in a field under a tree and doze off to all my nice cuts

Re: re: jamoco

I just gotta say (in the thread apparently since Riggs doesn't accept pm's) I do not appreciate the sort of softball, middle shool racist bullchit put forth by this resident of bryn mawr. Especially when, in the same breath he derides someone else's small mind. I don't usually beef on the internet, but Riggs, shut the f__k up. I apologize to all other buzzards for my anger and use of thinnly veiled profanity. Not usually my style, but wtf.

Re: re: jamoco

lol riggs only does this because he knows you guys respond to his post. Its a hobby to him, by responding your letting him win. I do enjoy the battles.

Re: re: jamoco

Isn't that how terrorism works?

This is the most derailed thread of all time. Remember how cool that guy landing those logs flat was. Whether or not he was wearing proper ppe.

Re: re: jamoco

Tom,

Just stumbled upon this thread. Your idea of a device that stops the chipper if a groundie goes in the chute is not at all far fetched. It's a great idea. Maybe you saw the episode of This Old House where Tom Silva demonstrated a table saw that detected when the blade was contacted by a finger? The blade was slightly electrically charged and detected conductivity. When it did, a spring loaded steel wedge INSTANTLY jammed and stopped the blade. It ruined the blade, but saved a finger. He demonstrated using a hot dog instead of a finger (obviously), and I swear the thing didn't have a nick on it.
See link at bottom - be sure to watch the video:

Why couldn't something similar work for chippers? Detecting moisture wouldn't work since trees are wet sometimes, but maybe something else? Alternatively, it makes sense to devise a panic button that would stop the machine like the table saw blade . Maybe it could jam the anvil up into the teeth with a spring or hydraulics? And reverse the feed wheels. But as I brainstorm about this, it occurs to me that a panic button on the operator is no good if his arm is being pulled in. Maybe something coworkers could wear, sort of like one of those wristwatch style GoPro buttons?

I don't know... the button better be damn hard to press, else you'll be going through teeth fast enough to bankrupt the company. Wouldn't be too good on the engine either. But the idea isn't crazy. SawStop

Re: re: jamoco

A method was developed but didn't go anywhere. A member of the buzz tried to champion it but was frustrated by the resistance of the manufacturers to put something in place.

Re: re: jamoco

Actually it's not just the chipper mfrs alone responsible for blocking any new rules or sensing devices to reduce the growing number of whole tree chipper fatalities on the job. The mfrs have been actively aided and abetted in their efforts by TCIA itself to limit their liability each time a groundie is eaten alive.

Two man minimum rule?

No, says TCIA...just be more careful, and train harder...you'll be ok.

Another article by the esteemed Dr. John Ball, and these tragedies will be understood in their proper light. Stupid mistake prone groundies deserve whatever happens to them on the job.

Right TCIA?
