So I wasn't sure where to post this, I'm still kind of pissed that I saw it and there seemed to be no concern what so ever about safety.

This company shows up just around the corner from me and fires up the chipper. Cool I am thinking, maybe I'll walk by and learn some cool tricks. Wrong!!! I walk by after about 15 minutes and notice everyone is in the backyard but the chipper is still running and in the middle of chipping up a large branch. Where is the operator and who is protecting the site from people getting sucked into this unattended chipper sitting on the street? No one!! Then I notice the climber in the tree, he is up about 30-40 feet and is about to make his next cut and is communicating with the 3 ground guys. Then I noticed it, the climber has no helmet and no eye protection on. WTF really? This is a major company in many states. Again, really this is how you represent our industry. I have a pic of this climber action but I don't know whether I should post it or not. This is part of the reason why we don't get the pay or respect we deserve, idiotic behavior from this guy and everyone on the crew for not saying something to him. And yes, you can be damn sure I said something.

I understand your frustration. Davey tree was in our town for about a year doing line clearance and I would just shake my head over and over again because of the things I was hearing.

Send it to ISA. I have the lady's number who deals with this sort if thing if you want it. Its unethical and pisses me off seeing these things. Definitely gives us a bad name. I was doing a side job the other day and the home owner was in complete awe that I was wearing a hard hat. She told me in all the times she has hired an "Arborist" never had she seen one wearing any sort of ppe. Pretty scary stuff.

I thing we should all call the be we know have some like this in our town trust but the said is I have they would be right an nothing was ever done

Sounds like the guys were not acting on behalf of the "company" but using their equipment to make some beer money. Until the consumer realizes the difference and regulators do their jobs and stop overlooking small companies this will continue. None of our local companies use ppe at all times. None provide regular training, none have Certified Arborists or Certified Tree Workers and this city is the second largest in GA.

Common now I told the boss... Just kidding. Frank, it's something we all struggle with everyday. Whether it's through our bidding or interacting with them. what I have found helps the most, when I have the opportunity, is I will approach the client, not selling anything but instead offering education. Earlier this month I spent an hour walking around a property for a neighbor of my client who had a hack on site all day. We watched the whole thing, and the lady asked "so... How did they do?" I gave compliments where they were due and explained the proper methods and procedures when needed. In the end the neighbor was eager to get an appointment in the spring for corrections.
I have found argument with the company or its employees very futile and I never get anywhere. I just let natural selection take over!

I'd love that phone # We are dealing with the same thing here.

Post it and report it.

I just sent pics and complaint to the ODA about a large turf care company spraying 2 4D on a hot and WINDY day. Right near my customers massing of Cercis.

We have to raise the bar and cant let dangerous work continue.

Are they advertising ISA certified arborist on staff? Then it's a code of ethics violation, first two in section I. and II. If they are members of TCIA then they are in violation of the pledge and code of ethics.

To take it a step further you also have a duty if you're a member of either or both to notify the organizations of such a violation. The more we do this the better the chance of things actually changing.

I saw something similar when coming home. The company hired to do my town's trees had a crew working on the street with no PPE, vests or traffic control. As an environmental commissioner in town I had to stop and deal with them. It'll go to the mayor and council next. This is a local company that seemingly has a lock on this work. I'll take a closer look at the RFP as well to see what the qualifications were.

I see the bigger problem of 3 groundworkers not knowing what to do and it sounds like the climber too. New untrained staff hustleing to break even and make the payroll. There'll always be walmart shoppers out there and some crew playing the price is right. Can't stop tree hacks there's been one in every villge since we lived in caves.
