Looks like that limb caught his climbing line or lanyard.

when i first started watching the vid i thought he was going to go over with the top of the tree. looked like he was going to top that tree out

1. sitting in his harness, not standing on his spikes.

2. what Norm said

3. when the limb tore his saw was still in the kerf and got janked

He's lucky that didn't even cost him a saw.

It's OK to do tear`cuts on pine limbs if you want them to fall tip first and kind of slide down the trunk but, you need to do it away from the trunk so the tear is short and thin and goes when you plan for it. Just know that when they go tip down they can spring a looonnnng way.

So did I...was disappointed when he didn't.

the tree kicked back, trying to get rid off this annoying persons cutting his branches off :-) ha ha ha ha

What really went wrong is allready said ;-)

climb safe - use your brains

I'm not going to defend him, but those limbs are difficult to cut without tearing sometimes. When I do those I like to keep my rope in bag on my belt to prevent that kind of thing. The best cut for those tough old fir limbs (lots of heavy conifer limbs) is a sort of bucking cut- cut bottom and both sides as much as possible (no undercut) and then fast from the top a little behind the other cuts.

Watching the vid slowed down, the torn strip on the end of the limb catches the orange thing hanging off his belt, probably his wirecore lanyard as it's obviously not around the tree.

haha, i see this video sparked some interest in you guys

a hell of a catch on the rope. try holding your climbing rope in a backpack. I have used a large camelback bag for this and used the hole where the the water hose comes out for the rope to come out of. worked well.
