Jim Dunlap suggested Transcender which I believe may have some staying power in the long run.

Transcender does fit...it overlaps ascender/descender and covers the mid-ground too.

Transcenders could work. The word type is similar to what people are used to hearing. I would much prefer a simple word as opposed to an acronym.

I kinda like 'Transcender', especially because these new tools are doing just that. That is a great way to sum it all up in a single word, without boundaries. Nice!

Transcender sounds great, but that would be an individual instance of the type: ascending descending tool (the generic epithet).

YoYo...I understand.

But...these tools are being developed for arbos and in time they'll move out of the trees and onto other ropes. If we think of naming the class or type of tool in arbo-terms it might hobble the acceptance.

There is a real possibility that the arbo world may have something to give back to the other rope worlds for once. We've sure done our share of modifying and cobbling of other systems.

I hear you and that is a good point.
Another way to look at it is that perhaps canopy work is to the place now that it should stand on its own and be its own product and its own discipline that others can use and modify to their liking. I'm not saying "break away" but it just seems to me, coming into these things late in the game, that the two disciplines have become very different and perhaps it is time to address them as such, very different. In fact if anything the association just adds to the confusion.
This of course is from my perspective, not having done much rock climbing and being introduced to all of this when it seems so "mixed-up" but different. The more I think about it, rock climbing seems more different than similar to canopy work.
