on a risk assessment today me and the sales rep took a walk to a nearby client to look at some odd symptoms on some hydrangea and and a dogwood. Very odd consistency, it abruptly starts at one point along the row of hydrangea but some others are starting to look like they may get the same symptoms soon. So there’s an odd, distinct pattern that’s not super consistent. I was thinking soil related or something abiotic but apparently there was nothing significant in the soil test results.

Did the lawn guy treat the grass with Escalade on a hot day? Or another ester formulation herbicide? I could see that causing the problem, it looks very likely to me that’s what did it. When was the last lawn treatment, and what did they use? The company that did the treatment will have to have records.

That was a possible scenario. The last treatment, if the pesticide flag was accurate was a few days ago. We had a hot weekend.

I forgot to get a timeline on the effected plants.

Are you sure the dogwood hasn't looked like that before?

There are some with verigated leaves that look a lot like that.

Herbicide seems reasonable for the hydrangeas they way it just starts. Have client request application records from lawn company so you know what was applied. Probably have them call department of agriculture (at least in Ohio, that is who regulates pesticides and who would investigate off target damage).

The rep indicated that it showed up on the dog at a similar timing. I have no history on the property but did mention variegation.

My first thought was chlorine damage as it was similar to previous damage I’ve found to the same. The pool is far enough away but not too far that a crack in it could be the culprit. the pool equipment is on the other side of property.

It is city water, but the pattern of only the one section of hydrangea in the L shaped hedge and dogwood really has me leaning toward herbicide damage more.
