What did you find in a tree today?

How about those steel pipes homeowners hammer in next to newly planted trees to "deep water the roots". 30 years later you have three ft. of cut resistant trunk. Takes destroying several chain before figuring it out.

I once fell a small cedar about 20 above the flare. Face cut went fine, so did the back cut. The tree wouldn't go over, it was one of those trees which you were sure it didn't need wedges. Cut a little more hinge wood and sparks flew, pulled out the wedges and slammed them in then stacked them. It was a tee post that was used for a stake, just a inch or so from the pith. It didnt' pull out but bent over as if it were the hinge. We bucked the log and bent it back to about a 45 degrees and packed up. Still drive by it once every few weeks, odd sculpture that will be around for some time.

Our landlords clearcut the hillside between our houses for their view. The person doing the felling left very tall stumps, and I use to cut rounds off them for a few years for firewood. Splitting them up I came across a small bullet slightly larger than a 22 cal. It was a great study, as it was shot into the tree about 20 years ago, and penetrated about 5 inches into the wood. I saved it for years, but it went missing when my wife cleaned out all the random scraps of wood in the house.

Yeah, it's not like they still make 'em that way... really, though, can you imagine what a pain it must have been to haul those things around? For big jobs, they would buy them in little kegs (like railroad spikes come in). If they tore a barn down, they pulled all the nails they could and used them to build the new one. Different times, man.

And so much easier as far as home life too. [emoji38][emoji38]

3/4 wrench. I found it forked between two small branches with a wire hanging off of it. Possibly to hang a wind chime or bird feeder.

tried to fell a stem without noticing that it was cabled to another
Someone here in CT felled a tree (20 years ago) without noticing the power company had guyed the pole across the street to it. Jerked the pole across the road, and the bank of transformers on top of the pole crushed a passing pickup truck and killed the driver.
