Weaver Saddle?

Location
Indiana
I am looking at getting my first saddle. I have been wearing a Weaver Floating Dee and like the durability of it. Right now I'm leaning towards it unless someone talks me into something else. I am not going to be spending all day in trees, so long term comfort is not a big concern. Right now, my main question is what is the main difference between the leg straps and the butt straps. Thanks in advance.

I climbed in a Weaver floating dee leg saddle for years and liked it, but didn't know what a real saddle was until I got my TreeFlex.

This saddle is truly built for the health of the tree climber in mind, and I wouldn't recommend anything else.

I spent some years in buttstrap style saddles...but they can be painful. Hip pitch when trying to spead one's legs between two brace points can be atrocious. Individual leg loops offer more versatility and(for me) comfort.(But badly adjusted leg strap style can hurt the gonads)Weavers are very solid and durable but I am convinced that other styles and designs are worth the greater cost.

I used a weaver floating d for three years and loved it until I advanced a little. I would suggest a versatile with the leg straps they are just about the same as a weaver only with less leather and more nylon ... they also hold up well and the switch from a weaver to the versatile is a relatively small step but is a lot more comfortable and lighter. If your not spending all day in trees yet I suggest going to a versatile they are reasonably priced too and sherill runs sales on them. I bought a butterfly II and it was a little harder to get used too than the versatile.

Yeah and I mean real little considering I spent almost three years in a weaver. I don't clam to be anything I'm not.

If you are still looking for a body positioning device my suggestion would be to at least look at the Bry-Dan saddle made by Weaver for the Sierra Moreno Mercantile Company located in Big Pool,Maryland.

I have been using this design for over twenty five years and have found it to be extremely versitile and comfortable. The rig has lasted a good long time for the investment.

The inset picture is the method that I use to attach my carabiners to the saddle. ( my choice not what is supplied with the saddle. I have found this Petzel Paw attachment helps in the comfort department and hook-up ease.

Remember it is your life on the end of that line....

I like the looks of the Versatile saddle also, but I'm still trying to decide if it will be worth the difference to me. I found one on this website that look like a good price and wanted to see if it is the right one. http://store.alexequip.com/child/05.shtml

I will have to look into the Bry-Dan saddle more, I can't seem to find much information on it right now.

I'm not sure which saddle you were looking at on your link, but that versatile has the bosun seat and I don't reccomend that. There Master saddle looks like the old traverse and that seems to be more of the one I would go for. You definately want to stick with the independent leg straps. I think they stopped making the versatile with the independent leg straps though. So you may be better off with the master and if you don't like the looks of it you should take a look at the butterfly II. Its about the same price of there master saddle.

You need to decide what is the best saddle for you. If you have the oppertunity climb on as many as you can before you make a decision, then i would try and do that. The company i work at has about four senior arborist who all climb on COMPLETLY differnt saddles and set-ups, and yet they all are producing top quality tree work. If you asked them what saddle was the best out of the four, of course they would argue theirs.

My point is what works great for one, will not work great for all. I tried about 5 differnet saddles before i made my decision. But also remember your not sitting in a lawn chair at the beach. You will be slightly un-comftorable in whatever saddle you climb in, from time to time.

Good luck my friend, !!!
