The trees are cut right in half, I don't even think it is considered topping. It is halfing.

When I've been south of the Crape-Mrytle line it's rare to see any that haven't been whacked. It looks like it would be a perfect tree to properly pollard. Instead, they get abused.

Yes Tom, you are right about that, pollarding is ok for crepe mryrtles. I will hunt down an properly pruned beauty and a pollarded one if I can find them.
