I've learned a bit about how to post from Glen. He also has given me insights about how the Internet works. Somtimes his posts read like Spidies and I have to re-read.

But...like any post, I can alwasy scroll past or not even look at what he writes.

When I've been on the road I've had to be on dialup several times. On those nights it is painfully slow keeping up with what is happening at TB. Loading pics that are no more than about 600x600 isn't really necessary.

I've seen Glen help dozens of people over the past few years with their computers.

Of course there are always his whining distracters! /forum/images/graemlins/slap.gif

I voted "yes".

But the choices, in fact the whole topic of the vote, are not valid.

I don't whine about them.

What I do is say "I can't afford the time to fetch your large pics. If you want me to see them (and I do want to) could you please make them more reasonable?"

Sometimes I even endure them (though usually not an entire large series) and offer them back "reasonablized".

If I don't want to see them, I don't fetch them. And if you don't want to read my posts you may skip past them, or even opt to have mine be entirely excluded from being presented to you. At least I seem to recall there is an option within the site preferences pages to "ignore" selected members.

The closest I'll claim to whining about images would be when folks load up their posts with embedded calls to unfriendly images from external servers. In those cases I have been stripped of the option to not see them and I consider that quite inconsiderate at best, if not downright rude.

I am occasionally encouraged by comments from what I consider to be quality members that either mirror my thanks for good imagery or that are offered entirely on their own. Such instances more than offset situations such as this present thread; but even this doesn't cause hard feelings on my part. I'm much easier-going than I sometimes seem to be. And I rarely maintain a grudge. Just two longstanding ones come readily to mind: the proprietors at "the other site" and the criminals in Redmond.

I demand a recount!!! /forum/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif

Naw, just kidding. But, you all know that was due. Besides, you all need to get high speed internet. Then if someone is a novice online and posts huge pics, it doesn't phase you one bit. I have DSL and I don't complain. "Once you go fast you never go back." Or, something like that. /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Some of us are as fast as we can get because of where we live. I get internet through a sattelite, tonight I reached a new (recently) level of around 81kbs downloading a video.

Notahacker, Glens seems to live in the sticks somewhere were the only thing he has available to him is dial up and WalMart. He seems to be a smart guy and very articulate so it can't be that boondockish of a place to live. The thing that drives me crazy is when he interupts a informational thred with the ongoing bantering about pic sizes.

The avatar with the chaps and crusty toenails is a bit gruesome too!!

Glens, Who are the criminals from Redmond you refer to? Did they steal your cable modem?

Don't be upset with me Glens, maybe we will meet one day at an expo and I'll let you punch me.

Mister Glens may be redundant but he's just consistent in asking for some consideration, or trying to help out people with some of the more technical aspects of computing. Most people know diddly about their computers except turning them on and using a mouse. Which I understand, alot of folks just want to focus on other things. But the less you know when using a computer, the worse things will run for you, and sometimes for others. Especially with PCs. They can run great if they are maintained, Glens (understandable) proselytizing about Mac/Linux aside, but if you don't watch out, soon enough you're loaded with startup applications, spyware, registry keys and all kinds of crap.
I live in the sticks, I was shocked when DSL became available last year, I thought I'd never get it. It sucks some people just can't get it. So I think it's fine for him to ask that people think about it. Doesn't mean you have to, or have to change things. Perhaps Glens should change his browser to not load images, if it's capable, then he could choose which to load. I dunno.
Sorry for my large avatar. Maybe I'll end up changing it. Maybe not. I didn't think about it until Glens mentioned it.
I was thinking of posting some crane photos. Would it use up too much bandwidth to load a small and large version of each for people to choose?

I don't punch first, I punch last if I can.

I don't believe I interrupt every thread though I'll plead guilty to a lesser charge.

Uh, well, I'm not a product of this environment. I've chosen it. I could move to town and have all kinds of bandwidth at low cost. I'm sometimes tempted but the allure of living in a hardwood forest is stronger. I have to go to town for Wal-Mart, too (and pretty soon the new Super Center will be open but I probably won't shop there any more than I've done in the current store).

I'm not upset. I'm idealogical and even if I did have great connectivity I'd still endeavor to be responsible. The moral requirement to do so would be proportionately higher.

The entity in Redmond to which I refer has been convicted of breaking antitrust law in this country, will soon be in the European Union, and likely again here once more on new charges not too far down the road. Perhaps when the current administration departs the new DoJ will pick the ball back up on the first conviction. They were found guilty, lost on appeal, and then the then new attorney general took it upon himself to effectively dismiss the courts' rulings by not following through with the punishment. Justice will prevail eventually.

I can't do anything about my skin tone. I stem from northern European stock. Perhaps I'll get rid of the avatar some day. I don't really much care for them anyway. Maybe I can resurrect the composite from before.

Watch out or you'll get the story on dipping your headlights when turning a corner with houses on the bend. /forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Look, it's like this Glens, we are talking about your whining not about your PC skills or knowledge. You have challenged me in the past and yes, you are right, a same size pic with lower quality yet un-noticable to the naked eye may be half the amount of Kb's ... lowering loading time, bandwidth use and storage for the Site.

So, whilst you may be correct doesn't mean you are not a whiner about it. Perhaps a more subtle way of getting your message across would be PM'ing the individual with your story and a sample of the comparison ... attach your version.

There's slowly becoming an infinite amount of systems, codecs, file types, etc. Every programmer or manufacturer thinks they have the preferred solution. It's tough Glens, just have to PM the people and perhaps get some sort of better connection when it's available.

To whine is to complain in a childlike manner (often with a nasal or crying-like tone). I deny doing that, and in fact am reluctant to even use the word "complain" to describe my actions. "Inform", "request", and "remind" are more along the lines. I might even agree that I sometimes could be said to "beg"; never whine, though.

Ekka, I'm not entirely nice about dimming my lights. As I do it I often wonder, sometimes aloud, why those daffy bastards would put their house right on the outside of a curve in the road like that. Hahaha!

Sorry, but it's pretty much considered whining.

Remember, tones don't do very well in a lettered medium.

Glen's alright with me. He's done a lot of good around here. I guess I'm used to his "redundancy" /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It is no more annoying to me than answering the ever so daily questions about "do you like this harness" and stuff. What Glen does is get the word out to people who have never heard it and would never hear it if he didn't do this (and of course bombard those of us who read every stinking post! /forum/images/graemlins/smirk.gif)

Your vote is funny Doc, but I choose to abstain!

That was hilarious, Dan. I guess I'm dense. I wasn't aware I was being beat up; didn't even cross my mind it was being attempted. Just thought it was some folks speaking their mind. I like that right and it certainly belongs to everyone.

I'd like everybody to listen to me when I'm doing it so I'm listening to them too. So we all hear each other, right? What say we all try to comply with each other's requests regarding these matters? None of them seem burdensome to me.

I saw mention of a report today that gave figures having "broadband" connections in the U.S. now outnumbering dial-up by close to 2:1, though the report was called into question by some. Looks like it's edging that way at any rate. I've got a friend a few counties north who lives in a more remote location than I do and Sprint came through giving him DSL a while back, so there may be hope for me yet. But I'm not holding my breath because my carrier is Ameritech/SBC/AT&T (the original Ma Bell back from the pits of Hell) and they evidently don't care as much for their customers as Sprint does.

Cheers, everyone!
