volcano climb

Looks like the TM saddle did well.

I'll have to put that on my list of things to do before I die.

We wrecked a whole heap of gear on the trip but totally worthwhile. Wouldnt want to use any other harness due to the amount of time spent wearing it-weve gotta buy new ones now though as they took a fair beating from the scoria and sulphur attacking the buckles and d rings.
Hopefully we will be taking people there next year-charter plane in to the island, chopper up, brief rope course and then at night go into the crater for the most amazing holiday snap ever, camp on the crater rim and chopper out the next day. Keen???

Seems like you guys do some amazing climbs! I would love to go to some of the place you all have climbed. If you ever need an extra hand with your expidition let me know.

Awesome vid
Goodaking

Thats me in the heat suit, bit of overkill for the cameras but at times you def needed it. WE were anchored at the top by big bags that held about 1-1.5tonnes of sand that were buried into the crater rim, there is absolutely nothing else thats solid to tie to, we could not get them to budge no matter what we did. Planned return trip in next few weeks to go deeper in, about a 400m descent below where we got to, thinking of using wraptors to ascend backup, its hard work with oxygen tanks, heat suits, camera gear, wtaer etc....... but im not complainin'

I dont know if I would advise using a gas Wraptor for that application. Lack of oxygen for motor and possibility of boiling fuel would be just a couple of concerns. We could probably supply an electric version which I believe would be better suited to the application, the concern then is the ascent distance. Currently we are only good for 800' of ascent with a 200lbs load.....

Drew, that was "sweet as"! Incredible idea and execution. Tell me, who's idea was it? One thing that I didn't see in the video was temp readings. If you didn't already do this you might want to take the readings while you descend. It would really help us appreciate what you are doing all that much more. Keep posting and thanks!

What method di the photographer use to ascend out?

Cheers guys. Next trip is postponed til march due to the cyclone season in vanuatu being now, kinda makes sense to not be there in 150kmh winds. Hopefully we will have heat cameras similar to fire service issue so temp readings will be (hopefully) easy to get. Its probably not as hot as it looks due to the sheer size of the crater, it sucks cold air down the walls as the hot gases are shot up and out the middle, its only when the wind changes that heat is an issue. The idea is geoff mackleys baby, he has been there numerous times over 12 years(i think) but things have always gone wrong, not enough gear, wrong people, bad timing,etc.. on his youtube site there is some vid of past trips. For ascending the camera guys had a RADS system and we had a 10:1 setup at the top for when they got tired. Brad used a variation of the treefrog and walked up and out. Jono was rocking the unicender but the scoria killed it very quickly. I used a cinch and that wore through too. We just had hand ascenders above as handholds and the weight of the rope made it run straight through the cinch/uni. Our back up was good old climbing hitchs on seperate lines-tree climbers after all! Cant wait til march.... and making the national geographic bucket list before xmas was super sweet.
