I can't answer for Rotax, but given the energies involved there is no PPE that is going to make much of a difference if something is sent your way. Also they are standing on either side of the chain/bar which helps protect them some. Last time I saw the Predator run the chain was pinches and its ¾ inch harvester chain was ripped to pieces. One piece (probably six inches long) went flying over the trees (100'+ tall) at the other end of the venue (300'+ out). It did not appear to have reached apogee as it crossed over them. We talked a bit about building a protective wall out of 6X6s or 8X8s that could be placed at the end of the bar to help try and keep things under control.
