I looked at a property today with 5, 7in dbh zelkova trees. One leafed out and totally wilted this spring. The others have full green canopies. The dead one and several others all have some serious vertical splitting on the trunk, not all facing the same direction. The completely wilted tree's outer bark has completely separated from the phloem with white fungi growing between.
I am not sure how susceptible zelkova is to extreme winter temps and sunscald, but we had one of the coldest winters in a long time. Beyond environmental issues, I'm at a loss and haven't studied this species much.
Any help is appreciated!
