Vermeer 252 question

Is it better to allow the belt to slide a little, and save the engine? Or is it better to keep the belt so tight that the engine will cut out if the cutter wheel is in too deep? With the cost of the belts so high, I'd rather have the engine cut out on me, but I don't know if that's hard on the engine. Another thing is that I, myself, will not kill the engine much at all, but other fellas using it will.

I haven't run a 252, but if you're asking this I would assume that the auto sweep is not function or has been "option deleted" .
If you run the belts loose you'll go through them and the pulleys faster than its worth. I'd Run the belts as tight as they are supposed to be and install a Flow control valve in front of the main hydraulic spool to slow down all the functions. In essence, doing the same thing as loosening the belts without wearing everything out. Then you can slow things down for big, hard stumps or inexperienced operators or speed things up for when you run it. Hope this helps.

The flow control isn't an option. The grinder still has the auto sweep.

What I was talking about was seizing the motor. It's the same thing as seizing a motor when you dump the clutch to fast in a truck. Is that hard on the engine? This might be a Q for the mechanic's forum.

hey thanks guys
