using tires to chunk down wood

I was chucking blocks into a driveway made out of small gravel/sand mix. It seemed bottomless must of been over a foot thick. This was the best energy absorber you could ask for. Even if they didn't land flat they stopped in their tracks, no gravel flew, and a easy kick to repair the driveway. I thought if their was a way, such as having landscape equipment around, to deliver a load of this mix and fill a tub or make a small pile it would be useful.

My uncles are hauliers, so 'borrowing' a pick up full of serious sized tyres was never a problem.

Watch out on asphalt drives; The wire rims in the tyres make slight depressions! The very fine sawdust collects there. Even more noticeable on new laid drives. Even after washing off, its noticeable.

Others have noted the bounce.

I think the best crash mat is making a mattress from the brush; absorbs and contains the load. Easy to cut up the logs after too. If the brash is prep'd for the chipper before dumping the logs, its straight forward to chip after the logs have gone. I'd keep any cord lengths out of the brash pile though, they can fly quite a way!

Saves an extra pick up load of tyres at the end of the day. But if there is little brush, tyres are great. Maybe best with a layer of foam under on asphalt.

I saw these things on an industrial estate once. They were like builders' sack material, about 4ft x 4ft x 12ft, maybe.

They were for packing, I'm guessing, but they were very light; I lifted one and threw it over an 8ft fence with little effort.

Any idea what these are?

No offence renta, but you do look like the kinda of guy who might wander on to a building site after dark rummaging for arbor ideas.

Done it myself. In fact I fell into a skip(dumpster) trying to pull out an old wheelbarrow so I could use the plastic inner wheel to wrap my throwline round.

Recycling is cool.
