Using the Microcender instead of Croll

This is in regards to the other post about backing up your hand ascender. I use my Microcender inplace of the Croll when I SRT. I finally figured out how to make my MC follow up the rope better. I took shock cord for fixing tent poles and tied it through holes that already existed in the MC. I then tied it to a biner which I will clip to my hand ascender. So far it works well. In the pics I left the shock cord long in case I need to adjust. Let me know what you think. Pics are not the best, but I think they show what I did.

Great idea.
I've just started doing the same thing with the Croll, using it under the hand ascender with a bungee for advancement instead of as an actual chest ascender, this is good when you want to footlock the single rope and still have two SEPERATE points of attachment to the rope. I realized the wisdom of this after having an attachment biner attempt to side load on me while footlocking SRT, forcing me to stand on my lock for a moment as my only support while I fixed the problem biner with one hand, the ascender was 'backed-up' with a hitch above it but everything still relied on that ONE biner, not good.

I believe this is referred to as backing up 'in series' whereas emr's photo illustrates backing up 'in parallel', much safer.

I used to use a mc before I got my croll, it worked great and was easy to thumb open if needed, ive since switched over to the croll, which I prefer because of how easy it is to unattach and discard when I reach my tip point

Very nice little setup

So..is the MC just floating below the ascender like Raven described or used as a chest ascender with suspenders and all? Very cool idea, i'll be checkin it out. Bad thing is it can't be attached mid-line.

MC can be attached midline. Pic just doesnt show it. Micrograb cant.

I knew it was one of them. I have the micrograb...darn.

The MC is just floating below, but it is attached with a seperate biner to my saddle. As far as how fair it is, usually it is not real fair and tends to cross load the biner. To solve this, I usually have a quick draw tether on it (not shown in pic)

I played with the MC as a chest ascender today a little bit...

I didn't have a tether so it was just tailing along on the D ring on my bridge. As I was thinking about how to make the system work, I came up with a similar solution to Eric's. I guess great minds think alike. I have suspenders attached to my saddle so I was going to attach the shock cord somewhere in there. I'm thinking that will keep the MC in a better position. A retaining band on the biner will help too...

I think with a little tweaking, it it will work fine

I am going to make up a foot loop tonight and see if I can scratch up a left-hand ascender somewhere.

Would attaching it to a suspender pull the MC at a different angle than up the rope? Are you talking about suspenders or some type of chest harness?

p.s. I agree about the great minds comment.
