Useful iPhone/Android apps for the job site?

Hey guys, I was just wandering if anyone has some useful apps they use on the job?

I was at a Dendrochronology lecture and saw someone pointing out some cool arborist apps and I never got a chance to ask him what they were.

Just looking for more ways to be efficient if possible.

Dirr's Guide ~ the best so far, IMO
Leafsnap ~ very close second, IMO
TreeID (MEDL Mobile)
TreeID? (Arbor Day)
a few Audubon Guides
PDX Trees, for those in the Oregon area wishing to locate urban trees.

I have been thinking about getting the credit card app. seems to make tons of sense to offer payment with cc.

Is there any other companies that offer better than 2.75 or is this the best company to go with? on a 1,250.00 dollar job they would collect almost 35.00 dollars off the top of your money. That's pretty good if you bid it in.

As far as getting a better rate than Square's 2.75%:

The future is coming: There is a movement gaining momentum for direct online payments (whip out that smart phone and pay-as-you-go) and the transfers avoid credit cards, the mega-corporate banks and their card processing middleman fees. No monthly minimum, and per transaction charges are low and reasonable (for example, coffee shops are starting to use Dwolla, as any transaction under ten dollars is free of charges) - the per transaction charge is just $0.25, whether you are receiving $10.01 or $50,000. Read about it at:

Early adopters will not find many folks using the system yet, but a lot of younger folks, the same ones who led the movement away from pricey landlines and use cell phones for all their communication needs are likely to propel these alternatives into the mainstream. I have my account set up.

Keep an eye on them...

I've been using Invoice to go regularly for two months and like it. Would like to find one that works better for bookkeeping though.
Dirrs
Leafsnap

Both great but very location oriented for Leafsnap.

Geopaparazzi-this is an android app that lets you take notes or photos and then Georeferences them, meaning that you can take notes or pictures, and then view them in Google Earth, so you know just where in the heck you were when you took that note that a tree was about to fall over.

I use Invoice to Go too. Not perfect but very easy. You can email a bid or invoice on the spot.

Do you suggest INVOICE TO GO? I looked at their website...

I just got (my first!) smartphone. Android - so I can use my documents from office computer. I downloaded my Invoice sheet but it turned out a little funny looking.

I want to email bids / invoices from the field, save some time and try to get paid quicker. I do not accept credit card payments - not sure how I feel about being tied into those bastards. I like the above post about more simple money transfer companies - staying away from the corporations...

I try to use technology to be more effiecient. I am not a 'computer geek' but I am not afraid either. What to do...

I can't 'strongly' recommend Invoice To Go because it won't suit you're needs if you need much customization but for simple estimates and invoices it works pretty much as advertised. Emailing a bid is dirt simple.
Getting the line items to work with tree business is a little tricky but totally doable.

wood calculators--darren gates

has a usefull log weight calculator that allows you to enter the diameter of both ends of the log and then the length. I find it useful when doing rigging that requires knowing trunk section weights.

Maybe I will call my Computer Repair Guy, see if he can straighten up the document. Just got a little lost in the translation from the Windows program. I trim his trees in tade every year!

I figure it will be real helpful to be able to email bids fast - especially for the comercial clients that want everything via email and before they leave the office for the day...

Evernote is great for looking at jobs and whatever random things you need to remember, dump sites etc a million other things I use it outside of work lots too. You can make shared notebooks, great for little fill in jobs when a crew is in the neighborhood or whatever. Stores stuff online so you can't lose it and is free unless you need to upload lots of data.

Why didn't I think of that? I guess that's why I'm hugging trees for a living...

That sounds sweet though, I'll have to check it out.
