twisted climbing ropes !?!

Try switching the crossover of the braid just above the hitchclimber so you have an over, under, under pattern on your braids. I've found that helps it run straight or reverses the direction of twist. I also hold a little tension counterclockwise on the knot when releasing it. With the knot your using it should run fairly straight if you hold clockwise tension while releasing it. That's my experience anyway. It changes a bit with weight and friction differences.

Is the XT any better for keeping the hockling down?

I switched back to a Knut yesterday and it was no better. The rope is already twisted though so who knows..
 
personally i run the rope through the hitch all the way to the end of the rope then untie the hitch (if i untie it at all). that with the other comments should solve your hocking problem with proper application.
