Looks opposite to me, but I'll still go Redbud.

Maybe the betulaceae family? Ostrya virginana?

It's a Carpinus. Hard to tell but it's a European but not a cultivar which is the norm here

Do you think that it could be one of the other more unusual species of carpinus like c. japonica, c. cordata, or c. laxiflora?

Not in white bread Columbus. Its at the zoo which has some nice plants but C. betulus is commonly grown and sometimes American hornbeam

I'm going to jump in here. This tree is not happy, see if you can figure why. It is the tree to the right side.of the house, not the tips of the one to the left.
