Pitch pine is correct. That was too easy. I'm not sure what the 3 in the photo represents. This photo was taken in RI at Ell pond. Probably the coolest woods in the whole tiny state. I'll spill the beans on my avatar because that was unintentionally added. There are no good clues in the photo. It is a scarlet oak. The photo was taken on the same day, at the same place. What appears to be opposite bud formation is where last year's terminal bud cluster was. The center bud didn't survive, leaving 2 almost opposite remaining shoots.
I guess Thillmaine. is up.

dang, I was going to say, Fagus sylvatica.

So, I'll just say the common, Fagus grandifolia.
