Pinaceae
Pinus densiflora 'Oculus - Draconis'
Zone 3 - 7
Pinus densiflora 'Oculus- Draconis', a cultivar of the Japanese Red Pine is known as the Dragon's Eye Pine because of the two yellow bands that mark the otherwise green needles. This banding is said to give the illusion of a dragon's eye when you look at it closely. The yellow banding becomes prominent on new needles by summer and provides a unique appearance to this pine.

Yup Yup that's the one. My next clue was going to be.."think outside the pine box". The wood is used by some furniture makers because it is almost white.

....nope.

but this isn't as tough as the last post of mine.

Very good Tom. You got it. Notice the concrete fill in the cavity? A little monument to our previous Supervisor, I find relics of tree care past all of the time.

There was a large oak removed on the V.A. campus across the street from us two weeks ago (we counted 125+ rings) that had completely enveloped a slab of concrete appr. 12"wide X 3"thick X 4' tall with a peice of rebar in it. Nobody called me till it was over, but I hear they had to use an enormous bottle jack to break it loose from the stump. I will try to grab some pics of the stump next chance I get. It had to suck finding that with the saw.

Yeah, I saw the white, but thought it was just some white inner heartwood. Man, I considered umbrella pine so many times with the last one, but the photo looked like there were cones at the end of each branch, which I didn't think they had... Just looked it up and I was WRONG! Ya learn something every day. Anyway, here's another:

(PS - Your earlier one, the toontree, exists all the way up here. I looked it up, and we have a pretty big (70') RI State Champ.)

Nope.

Sorry about the haze... I think it was just really sunny. The camera is a Sony Cybershot 5.1 set to the highest quality setting. I think it loses some quality when I put it up on the photo sharing site, too.
