Trees from a distance

maybe it's not so easy tom :D I'm using a field guide-- National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Trees (Eastern Region)

nothing else in the "white flowers" section looks close to your bush with those vertical petal clusters. is this guy found out west?

curious--what are you using in your id process? a hard copy book/guide? online? or both?

I have learned ID many ways... Most of the trees I post are trees/shrubs that I am familiar with, so no need for a guide. I use the Audubon guide and Dirr's manual mostly. As a clue, this shrub common name is two words, each a different genus, and is frequently reversed. If you are looking in the Audubon guide for white, cone shaped flowers, you will definitely find this genus.

then I'm going with prunus alleghaniensis.

says the fruit can be made into preserves--sounds like my kind of plant.
