When he said it was a one genus family I went straight for the Audubon guide!

I always guess from the gut, but once I'm stumped all bets are off! I do whatever it takes... Including high-res GPS computer laser-tronics. :)

It's actually not, sorry if that was confusing. I figured 'Rhamnaceae' would pretty well solve it, and I don't recognize many other genera there.

(Okay, I'll try to post this for the second time. Don't know what happened.)

Your clue suggests Ginzu knife, so one of those words should be a hint.

The only thing close to the word Ginzu would be a tree called Akou. But it doesn't look quite like that.

From the looks, I'd say Japanese Stewartia – Stewartia pseudocamellia.

no one has said Chinese Elm, Ulmus parvifolia; because it's kinda common and you said it was not a common tree as far as you knew.

but, I'll just throw it out there anyway.

Ulmus chenmoui W. C. Cheng, commonly known as the Chenmou, or Langya Mountain Elm.

because of it's doubly serrate leaf margins; is that how it is joined to the hint? Ginzu knife has double serrated edge maybe?
