They grow wild in RI?

[/ QUOTE ]

I have never seen a wild one, but their range extends North of RI into MA (Audubon Field Guide), so I would say that is a definite maybe. At least they can exist here without special conditions.

I'm willing to bet they are found in coastal forests with some frequency, albeit little.

That's six guesses. You're DQ'd.

Good night, Canada!

I know its not, but I was just down in MD a month back or so and took a hike out at Harpers Ferry in WV, saw alot of sassafras albidum?

Or how about quercus prinus?

I know they're both wrong, but being buried in the shade does funny things to leaves!

Thanks, Both him and Matt got me with a long toothed Aspen not 2-3 weeks ago. I could of sworn it was lamborady poplar but, they was right. Leaf just didn't look toothed to me for some reason. Maybe cuase it was like 106 out and we'd already put 5 trees down before lunch.

I don't know what magnolia tripelata is....

and you are still not quite rightT.

L for the T?

well, it's past the deadline.

here is another picture (up close) and a few clues.

It's a magnolia.

It is very rare in Maryland. I remember when I did some tree work for Dr. Brown (who wrote my dendro book in college), he said, "you are from Harford county huh? I remember a tree I found there at Rocks State Park that I found no where else in Maryland, Magnolia _ _ _ _ _ _ _."

And I remembered that name and always wanted one since.

Anyway, check out the lack of lobes at the base of the leaf as the leaf tissue meets the petiole. So, it's not fraser, pyramid or bigleaf magnolia. It is....

Go ahead Tom....

It is similar to the spelling of some Magnolia you mentioned that I had never heard of before....
