Trees from a distance

Starbucks is just one of the yuppie-type places Jimmy likes to frequent, good place to begin your search. If he isn't there look for the nearest nail salon, he may be inside getting a 'pedi'. Cigar bars or cigar stores would also be a good place to look.....

Nope, but like the Gleditsia, this one is also part of the Fabaceae family. It grows much smaller. I've seen honey locust that almost reach 100'. I've not seen one of these much more than 40'.

Okay, Robinia was going to be my second choice.
With purple flowers it's probably 'Purple Robe'.

If it is this tree, I think it's the wrong tree in the wrong place.
So what that they have "pretty flowers" and can take poor soil and little water. These guys have agressive roots and brittle wood. Not the kind of tree you want growing up around a school yard.

Sorry about the rant, but a housing development up on a hill planted Robinia everywhere and now whenever the winter winds pick up these trees just break up and fall all over the residents' cars, roads and roofs. What a waste. And I won't even mention what the roots are starting to do to sidewalks, fences & foundations...
The landscape architect/contractor should have spoken to an arborist first on that one.

Not a bad guess! Here we have C. Occidentalis aka Western redbud, which is almost never found in 'standard' form as shown here.

Another hint is that the this tree has leaves that are VERY similar in shape (not size) to the Western redbud.
