Tree Rats

[ QUOTE ]
What type of squirrel and what kind of tree was that?

The tree was a honeylocust but they'll eat them all. Usually the damage is located on the top sides of the branches closer to the trunk. The English Oak tree from my avatar has extensive damage from the buggers. Once actually attacked my throw line in that same tree. He nicked it up pretty good but he took a throw bag to the side of the head after I gave it a good yank.

I think they call it a Rocky Mountain Red Squirrel. They'll stand there ground in a tree and can even be aggressive.

We have the same problem here with squirrel damage to trees. They don't eat the bark. They are rodents, so their teeth continually grow and they have to gnaw on something to wear them down, or they would eventually grow so long that they would be deformed and unusable. If they gnaw on nuts, they're fine. If there isn't many nutbearing trees around, they will gnaw the bark off the trees. I find plenty of porkchop and steak bones in crotches also. All half gnawed by squirrels.

I've trapped them with dog bones as bait in a rodent cage. Later released them in a nearby woods. Give the flying squirrels to my neighbor. He's had ROCKY for three years now. It's smart & really entertaining.

We were removing a silver maple today that had a couple hollow branches that were housing about six gray squirrels altogether. The first hollow limb we lowered out was at about 40ft and had three in it with two of them coming about five feet from hitting me and the other about a foot from hitting the boss man. Last one to fall was about 60ft. It still surprises me how fast they run off after taking such a hard hit.
