tree moving

Wow, on the Compton move, the pushing excavator was the only machine not in reverse. You would think with that much iron there, someone would have mentioned that
 
Ya I was going to ask about that one. So that one did live, huh? That tree would look great in my backyard.

Oh and now I see treehumpers post. Maybe not in my backyard.

The root plate is lifted using hydraulic gantries. When I watched them move trees a the U.S. Capital they did not use air bags. All the trees survived the move. I believe the largest one moved was a 24" tulip poplar.
 
I think an important aspect of moving large trees is root pruning at least one season ahead of time. This allows the tree to grow more root hairs within the root ball and ultimately reduces the stress of the move.
 
Interesting on the use of the air bag. I've seen where they are used to roll ships back into water. I wonder what plan B looks like.
