tree felling with POV1 helmet cam

I have wanted a helmet camera for a while now and last week I eventually buckled and paid quite a lot for this one. http://www.vio-pov.com/

Great features, quality footage, robust (shock, dust and water-proof) and not a hindrance to the job or my performance!

Any way, I’m not sure about it now. The end result is all quite bewildering and difficult to watch IMO!

But perhaps with practice, a wider lens, taller tree etc, I’m not sure.

Re: the actual job. Nothing special, just a 25 year old euc in a back garden.

Any credibility that this video might have had is ruined by this particular crew’s refusal to wear their helmets. Also, the grounds-man underestimates/under-wrap’s the very last branch/top which then proceeds to spiral out of control and smash up the clients cherished Japanese maple, which he’d done so well to protect up until that point.

Worth a look but there’s just something frustrating about it.

Unusual point of view, cool. I need to get me one of those.

Do you always put a front cut in your cuts? A lot of the time I like to let it tear with a hinge, to slow everything down. Just wondering.

No, not at all. I often let stuff tear. Oaks, euc, pine etc all work well. That was a real easy tree though, perfect rigging point, open canopy... so the cuts weren't really that critical, more the rope positioning.

For some reason the videos on the google site just never play for me.

I received that last disk, Reg, but haven't viewed it yet.

I hope the POV 1 works out for the better for you. I'll keep in touch with you.

Looks ok to me Reg although I'm not sure the quality is any better than a cheaper version.
Jerry, are you using an updated browser to view the videos?
I can only view them with IE.

how tall was that Euc.? just curious because they don't grow here, and you said about 25 years, so its just a way for me to gauge the growth. I did like the knotless rigging, you certainly proved its efficiency. I also got a chuckle from you glancing (or it appeared to be) at the green house below. Glad that wasn't under your tree. One suggestion is to take a shot of the whole tree with the helmet cam as you approach it first thing in order to gain perspective on the size and situation. thanks for sharing. had to turn down my volume when that saw first fired up ; )

kevin.....google video or youtube brings pretty much the best quality video down to a level playing field....i bet if you saw the original footage it would tell a different story

Roger, I'm not too good at estimating a trees height but I am ok judging how far its going to fall, if you get my drift. Well, there was about 15 ft above my tie-in point and I just about had enough rope (33m) to touch down, so whatever that is + the rope stretch!

Kevin the quality of the original footage is excellent but the file-size is huge as a consequense, so I had to compromise that in order to put in on the web. Cant really fault the design though, everything about its makes sense, I just need to get the hang of it.

Can't view the POV with IE either. But I did view the video Reg just sent me in the mail. Cool. Real steady camera in that one and the ending was a real suprise.

Great work all around, Reg. Good stuff, thanks.

Great vid Reg, I also like it cuz it is long and detailed.

Too many climbing vids leave too much on the cutting room floor.

Cool video, Reg!

I like the time check with the phone and the wristwatch.

I thought the video was easy to watch, and it was good to see such a sharp stihl in the tree.

Thanks for sharing that, and I hope to see more from your new camera!

That was the video unit in my pocket (I was checking the battery) and wireless remote on my wrist to stop/start the recordings.

So you went and bought one of those then, Steve's been on about them, think he might be getting himself one for christmas.

I like it, its a good angle. You could make some great training videos with that.

Tis a wonderful video Reg, the vista extraordinary. I will say a little prayer for you and your helmet.

Thank you

Gary

Amen

Oooh, all James Bond and stuff!

I was wondering, the watch looked a little different, guess I should have looked at the link you put up about the camera setup, and I would have been able to figure it out.

Oh well. I always jump to conclusions :)
