Tree falls on park full of children. Scary stuff.

Saw that on the news last night. Happened about an hour from me. It's crazy that no one checked that tree. They said the other trees at the park were "inspected" afterwards but no mention of how and by who.

News story mentioned "Park Renovation" and play area looked fairly new. I imagine someone will get a new one torn over this

I have a feeling no one ever inspected those trees. They are just TRYING to cover there bases. IF someone was to have inspected them. I highly doubt that it was a qualified person. There are a lot of really good tree care companies around that area that have highly skilled certified arborist that could have evaluated them

It failed at the roots. The think turf around the base of the tree looks from the grainy video like no one did a RCX. This video should be saved for everyone to show to HO's why you don't let construction crews be in charge of trees.

Maybe I am jumping to conclusions here. But very new playground around an older tree may indicate roots severed.

2 years ago we cleared some trees as speced for a playground but the the playground guys thought they should change things because 'there was room'. The cut half of the roots of about 8 80' silver maples right up to the trunk with a back hoe. We were losing it but people where happy because 'there was more room now'. Can't let the kids go on the grass. We unofficially keep an eye on them for root issues but more so the formation of large dead tops/limbs. It's terrible and the trees weren't all that shit hot to start with so fingers crossed.

Sorry for the vent but come on people.

That's because everyone shows up and sees the playground and stop there anything else would be outside there bubble

I'd like to see the Tree Protection Plan that was developed during the planning phase when they decided to renovate the park.
Oh, wait. There isn't one.
Arborists are only called in after the damage is done and there's a problem.

The basic sickness in this process is the Town's own exemptions from its own rules--no protection plan, etc.. They get away with murder because they can and they don't care. I know there are exceptions but this is my impression of munis in general.

Depends on the muni Guy. Strong ordinance+enforcement with power to issue stop work will tend to cause contractors to toe the line better in the end.

oldo, i was talking about munis not following their own ordinance on muni projects.

In NC they mostly don't.

That park looked like a muni project.

I'll agree there. They tend to follow their rules when it suits. The city arborist needs to be the squeaky wheel in those cases. I'm a squeaky wheel!
