Tree falls and kills man at country club

Well then, good luck with your nursery business.

Just a note on how a tree can kill a sawyer...

I removed a nice sized (~30")leaning red oak last week with a severe dogleg at the base. I wish I'd taken a picture because it turned out to be a really interesting fall.

Anyway, I faced it and was about to fall it when I took a last look at my position. I was on the uphill side but the footing was marginal so I moved to the low side. I always high tail it when the backcut starts to open. The tree fell slow at first so I had time to get away, turn around and watch.

It stayed the hinge most of the way but when it popped the butt it jumped to the uphill side and about 8' high... no exaggeration. It was fairly spectacular to see wood that big fly like that. Had I stayed on the up side and not bolted when the tree started to go I would be about 3" tall now... and wouldn't look quite so hansom as before.

Without knowing more I'm guessing the tree set back and he stayed around trying to stop it.

The stump area is the last place in the world I want to be when the tree falls.

It's too bad, no tree is worth dying for.

i dont like that idea either. if you dont already try a rope along. they work great as long as the cranker and the cutter stay together and comunicate.

Blinky: I'm sure in extreme situations like yours, that was an exception... But, we trained pros know to make an escape path first. And it sounds like you made wise decisions. And those decisions most likely came from your training and most of all experience. I'm glad you told the story.

And I'm aware that a sawyer "can be killed" by a tree barber chairing as well. (For those who want to really tear apart what I said).

However, a trained/experienced person may be able to see the warnings of a B.C. and take appropriate measures to mitigate that from happening.

I'm weary of the response from the guy's boss. I have a feeling he and his staff know how to identify potential dangers when falling trees. I have a feeling this man's death could have been avoided.

I agree completely... I just wanted to tell that one, it was pretty spectacular.

Calling it a freak accident is definitely wrong. Freak accidents almost never happen.

I attended a seminar last week with Bruce Smith of North American Training Solutitions and he gave the following stats: In regards to trees falling on the cutter, 90% of deaths happen within 5 feet of the tree (i hope I am quoting this right, it was late in the day). Taking a couple of steps out of the way increases your chance of remaining surviving. Blinky, glad you are not 3" tall. Would be hard to start a saw.

Oh Contrare! The Cardinals somehow managed to make it to the Super Bowl.

Thankfully the Steelers will put them back in their place.....wherever the hell Arizona is.

Your Steelers are about to become birdfood.

I'm so glad I don't root for a team that would consider turning other teams into "birdfood".

Close game, but it proved that the Cardinals had no business thinking they were going to beat the Steelers.

He is pure evil Andy. I mean really, who throws the Christmas tree in the swimming pool?

Did I tell you that he voted me out of the cabin in Florida?
If it were not for THE Altreeist and Blinky, I would have been out in the cold for sure.

His rage was 10 folded when the Cards walked all over his pathetic Panthers.

I think there is help for Stephan though.
No matter what it cost, no matter what it takes, we should do somthing to help the poor young soul
