Traveling Arborist

Hello all,

I've recently tossed up the idea of traveling with a long time girlfriend of mine, were still pretty young and would both like to get out and see and experience more places. It's easier for her to drop everything and go as she has been going to through college then grad school and hasn't fully begun her life. I've been working for the same company which I love for almost 4 years i've also gone to school for my associates in arb. I've got my ct arborist license as well. I'm looking for advice now since i'm not sure what the work situation would be like if i was to travel. I'd stay in this field of work, I'm not sure if I should look into a large company like bartlett that can transfer me or if I should jump companies (starting over at each company sucks.) I haven't made up my mind if I want to ditch what i've worked so hard to get already but i'm weighing my options

I'm well rounded in the field with experience.

I'm positive that with a good sum of money saved and some creative thinking, this is entirely possible for you. I say go for it. I traveled and lived in some different areas myself, working in Boston, Denver, and Portland. Your well roundedness will likely become more round, if that means anything at all. Bonners advice is Golden.

I'm appreciating all the motivation, I still have hefty school bills so money would be my issue but as along as im busy working they wont be so bad, also I've already been saving for a few months.

Not with the tree industry but with the Carpenters Union. I have worked in a few different states and have been on some really cool projects. Would love to go out West. But I'm getting grounded with family and the wifey doesn't want me away from home. I would visit all the states if I had the chance.

I think that be the biggest thing to consider with this being thought of as a potential career move.

I think it's a great idea! Traveling to do tree work is a fantastic way to meet cool people and learn tons of new stuff. I have done tree work in 6 different states already this year. The hardest part is that you have to hustle to set stuff up. Call ahead. Nobody knows that you want to climb trees unless you tell them. I know a few companies here in Denver that would probably hire you for the summer. Best of luck to you.

Once you get your rep going as a travelling climber it shouldn't be too hard starting at different spots, especially if the people who hire you post on TreeBuzz!

I have a dream year in mind... Eugene, Nor Cal, Texas, Colorado, North Caroina... one of these days....
