Trango Cinch lanyard malfunction

Well, its official, after people talking about the Krab clip on the lanyard being about to roll out, it happened after 8 months of use.

I was around 60 feet up a Red Oak had just repositioned my friction saver and had my lanyard in just for some stability to the tree, it rolled out, i ended up just falling back into my climbing line maybe a foot, gave me one hell of a scare tho. waiting for my new lanyard to be delivered on thursday so this one can be retired.

Glad you're OK!

More details, please? How was the snap positioned, what was your position, single leg, double leg, what harness are you using, where was the snap attached, etc???

Funny how arborists have to experience it, before they abandon it.
I demonstrated how this krab could roll-out at the WAA TCC in front of you. Seeing is NOT believing?
Glad you're OK.

Just to be sure I understand what failed, did the failure have anything at all to do with the Cinch or would the same thing have happened if a Grigri had been used in place of the Cinch.

He is talking about the rope snap on it i believe...with the carabiner type head. Roll out as in pressure was placed on it for it to be open and a movement of the body caused it to "roll off" the d ring....this is my guess

it had nothing to do with the cinch, i had it connected to the front d's on my treemotion, Norm did demonstrate this in front of me but i had just bought the damn thing and wanted some use out of it, i was very careful when only connected with my lanyard like when moving my tie in. the problem exists when it can the back side can be pushed against the trunk. Just spliced a new lanyard with an aluminum snap, thimble, and velocity running thru the cinch... my mind is back at ease.

Matt you scared the sh*t out of me with that 'Subject line'.
My first thoughts where there is something wrong with the Cinch but the fact is that the piece of equipment that was used that failed, was not up for the task.
The 'malfunctioning' piece was not designed for the task that someone put it in.
The snap is initially designed for attaching on a (overhead) lifeline and not for attaching on a D-ring of a harness.
It's nice to see so many innovative new pieces of equipment. But.... A flipline is during a day's work in many occasions the one and only thing that keeps us from plummeting to mother earth. So why are there still resellers who sell these fliplines with less than a triple locking biner spliced in the end.

ya, there is nothing wrong with the trango cinch, just the clip. Spotter, I only used this as a work positioning lanyard, not as a flipline on spur removals, for that I use a microcender and steel core flipline.

Sorry cochran, got some guys at work that are eyeing it up today.
