Got up Saturday morning, had a cup of coffee on the front porch, went and put the cup back on the counter, went back outside and noticed a fire and smoke column across on the other side of the property. The trees where starting to catch fire as well.
Drove over there and a car had run into a tree and was burning. Got a hose and started to put things out and noticed the passenger door was open then noticed a body burning as well. It had been thrown out of the car and I thought I had better hose it off otherwise, well I thought it would be best to start by doing that, so thats what I did. I could see that the gas tank had already blown up.
Put the body out and started to hose off the burning wheels. By then everybody showed up, fire dept. helecopter, EMT and lots of people.
What happened was the old guy next door got into his car to get his paper. Musta had a stroke or something and his foot locked onto the gas and the car just ripped through the vineyard and finished up on a tree. He was a good guy and I hope he was already gone before the burning started.
A neighbor came driving up and parked her truck right next to the burning car and started yelling at me-" what have you done!, what is going on?!" At that moment one of the car tires exploded and I told her to get her car back, off the driveway so the fire dept. could access the scene. She just started yelling at me again wanting to know what I had done! She was maybe 4 feet away from this burning compact car! For some reason she refused to move her car so I just ignored her, got behind a tree for cover and continued to hose the car off.
People behave in funny ways in an emergency. The fire dept guy told me to next time just turn the hose on the person and they usually get the message. He says this happens all the time.
The man's family showed up and it was sad in a way but his son told me that he was really sick and had been for a long time so maybe this quick way of death was good in a way.
All in all an eventfull day.
Really made me realize just how fragile life is...
