too much friction thru redirect?

If you must climb in a Ddrt system and redirect, just set up a pear biner on the loop runner, but use 2 small CMI swivel pulleys/Pintos for each end of the rope. Easy setup, and no headaches on a limbwalk return. But as has been mentioned, SRT is really the way to go here. One of the main advantages of SRT is redirecting without friction into your climbing system. The setting up of a second Ddrt system is also hugely beneficial in certain scenarios. It's all about expanding your "tool box" and knowing when to use those tools.

The complexity of getting a clean and efficient redirect while using DdRT is one of its major drawbacks. So much easier with SRWP that DdRT has fallen to the bottom of my toolbox. When working out a downward sloping limb, if I will need a smooth weight reducing return, I will just set a haul-back at the redirect. Smoother and easier than fighting a DdRT system that is strung throughout the tree.

Man, lots of really good info I got from this post. Thanks everyone for all the time. Ok, so now I'm really wanting to try some SRT, so what's considered the best and simplest system (if there is one)? I've briefly read up on and watched a few videos on the Rope Runner, Rope Wrench, Unicender and the Hitch Hiker 2 and based on what I've seen, I like the HH2 the best. It seems really simple and compact and pretty easy to switch over to from ddrt while in the tree. Let me know what's out there that works well. Thanks again. BTW, I mostly climb on Tachyon and occasionally some Arbormaster BRW now…will these ropes work ok for SRT?

I prefer the HH2 but with you already having the Hitchclimber pulley, getting a RW would be a logical choice to make the transition into SRWP. You have all the rest of the components, so do a little more reading on working with an SRT system and enjoy.

Hey, ccooper!

I think you must read this thread started by Reg Coates, which is featured in the Stationary Rope Technique forum, entitled " Rope Wrench, without incident."

Reg gives his opinions about the Rope Wrench, and Reg comes across to me as being so astute it's hard for me to fathom. His observations are unique and I think very important, especially for someone like you that is just starting out with SRT work.

I'm working off of my handheld computer right now, and am unable to post an actual link to the thread, but you can find it with the info I've given you so far.

I would also recommend a thread started by moss that deals with getting hitches to behave properly, which is something that I've frequently had trouble with. A lot of the suggestions in that thread were things I'd never seen mentioned before, so I think it's an important one for you to read, also. I'll try to find the title of that thread, also...

Ok, here it is... " Addressing hitch binding with the Rope Wrench on descent", thread started by moss.

It is also within the Stationary Rope Technique forum; search on the title and moss's name to find it. I still have not yet had a chance to climb and try all of the suggestions in that thread, but I'm excited to try it all the next time I climb a tree tall enough to give me my typical issues with a binding hitch on the Rope Wrench. I'm hoping that this thread started by moss turns out to be a game changer for me. I hope it is for you as well, ccooper.

@ccooper I have to agree that the hitch hiker is gonna make the easiest transition from a hitch based Ddrt to a hitch based SRWP system.
