I think I'd have to beat up your ropeman if he was lowering for my arse.

I second that. You need sweeter hands than that!

Re: today\'s job \"Step cut 3\"

I watched the boring video almost to the end.

to sum it up; Daniel you and your groundman suck!

Go do some other kind of work, like.... gutter cleaning or something.

get out of the trees man!

You stir up such hatred in me it is baffling to myself.

Re: today\'s job \"Step cut 3\"

I don't have time to read all the comments already posted, so I apologize if it's already been said . . . and of course I didn't even watch the whole video, once I realized you were doing another one of those weirdo cuts where four angles and a skid loader help "save time" on a vertical spar over open ground . . . but I did find some good links on the YouTube sidebar to your video on layer cuts for hair! I've spent an hour running through them, and I think I have a qualified sense of hairstyling now, at least enough of a feel for it to have a go at my girlfriend's 'do. Thanks, and wish me luck!

P.S. here's a direct link, without having to go through the bizarro tree cutting thing: Layer Cut Steps

Re: today\'s job \"Step cut 3\"

Yeah that layer cut thing's been mentioned a couple a dozen times already.

Very informative though... I never knew you stood on the client's left while cutting the right side of their hair!

Blinky i've done that cut 100's of times before. Just because you've never stood on the left to cut the right doesn't mean it's dangerous.

It also saves time for the apprentice sweeping up the hair at the end.

Re: today\'s job \"Step cut 3\"

rigging should have been far more dynamic, lots off room there...and the tops just allmost drop load without any dynamics in there. If it was my groundie doing this he would have been fired straight away.

climb safe

Maybe you have done it before trevmcrev but I'll wager you moved your feet during the cuts. The video clearly states that you should NOT move your feet.

See, if you move your feet while cutting you lose your reference point and if that happens? Disaster is certain to follow... you could end up with a mullet, or worse... a skullet.... think about that. I HAVE a skullet, I know what I'm talking about.

Just because you got away with it a few times doesn't make you an expert.

Even though its gonna make me sound as arrogant as ever.......

Daniel, your middle name should be Black & Decker, cause you are the biggest tool I have ever seen. That flush cut piece you wrestled to the chipper almost got the best of you, and yet you still put the footage up. That's what a tool would do.

Your videos are hilarious, the only sad part of all of this are the beautiful healthy trees you are taking down on a daily basis. I think it's been said before Daniel, but you really are the problem in this world. I thank God that he broke the tool mold after making you. Imagine if everyone were like you, every tree in the world would have been dropped into a dangerously small landing zone, and filmed while a buffoon tries to explain the very obvious in a roundabout way.

Keep the faith Daniel, and for Gods Sake, make that damn gutter cleaning video that I keep harping about.

Re: today\'s job \"Step cut 3\"

Ok so I just watched the first part of "Step cut 3" and now I see what everybody's talking about. Fire that groundie or train him... that was pathetic roping... ESPECIALLY for a dead tree.

If you aren't using professional ground help, you aren't doing professional work. Never mind that a pro groundie is FAR more efficient than someone without experience.

Try finesse sometime... it's pretty cool.

Kind of sounds like your ripping people off if you ask me.
2500 and you call a couple of hours for "extra" pruning "throwing them a bone"
I dont know man.
I think you just pissing people off
Dont yell at me
Im street rat crazy.

NO offense taken...
Tree services tend to be small due to economies of scale, leaving a market with many competitive providers and many buyers. This kind of market is where capitalism works best.. Supply and demand will effectively regualte pricing and the need for competitive advantage will propel advancements in productivity and safety etc..

When I have a good day, $wise, I AM grateful for it and know I have paid my dues in this business. I gave the customer a price and he had plenty of opportunity to get others (which he may have done), we shook hands, I did what I said I was going to do, and a little more, with very little lawn damage, and he was happy.

It doesn't bother me and shouldn't bother you either. Its the low ballers that are really hurting the legitimate companies in this industry. But that shouldn't bother you too much either.

If you want to know what should be bothering you READ THIS!!!!!!!!!!!

If that doesn't make your blood boil, nothing will. Give me a break, I AM just a hard working tree guy, putting my life at risk every time I go to work. These guys are ripping off the whole country!!!!

Re: today\'s job \"Step cut 3\"

Mabey if you would change things up a bit you wouldnt feel your life was at risk every time you go to work.
That must be stressful as hell.
Stay safe Daniel

Re: today\'s job \"Step cut 3\"

The only time I feel that my life is at risk, is driving back and forth to work. I feel safer on the job than I do going Christmas shopping with my wife.

That particular groundman is very sensetive, with a lot of personal pride. He takes no disrespect from anyone, especially when he's in a bad mood. He's been a black belt martial artist since he was 12 and started collecting for drug dealers in the worst part of philly when he was 15. later he worked for years as a bouncer/manager of a bar where everyone was frisked for weapons at the door. Only ever been beat once, by his father, who was 6'7" and 350 lbs. at the time. When he was 13 years old he threatened to kill the father if he ever laid a hand on his mother again, and the old man must have believed him, cause he never touched the mother again.

He's the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet and he'd give the shirt off his back to a stranger in need... JUST don't piss him off!

People love to talk crap on line cause they think there is no accountability to their actions. You wouldn't talk like that to a person's face, would you dave?

I'd pay $100 just to see the look on your face when he introduces himself to you. Of course I AM going to mention to him that the boys on line were giving him a lot of crap about his rope work as a motivator to step up his game. And he has checked in on TB in the past.

I personlly was OK with his rope work. Sure it could have been better, and maybe he could have had less wraps. But there was 0 chance of that tree failing due to shock load, and the ride was more fun than scary.

Re: today\'s job \"Step cut 3\"

If our lives weren't at risk then we wouldn't need safety standards or equipment.. OSHA doesn't come to the office to make sure the secretaries are using proper PPE!

Let's get real here. We all love the risk or we wouldn't be in this business.

Re: today\'s job \"Step cut 3\"

Daniel, did you just make a third party threat?

Thats probably the most interesting thing you have ever done. I've met big fellas before, and I can probably run faster scared than they can angry. I'd have no problem criticising the technique of a groundman in order to see a safer work environment. If I was so concerned about being able to safely tell a coworker how to do his job properly, I would either leave the job or fire him.

0% chance of failure....gimme a break.

Re: today\'s job \"Step cut 3\"

Given the size of the pieces, the distance fallen, the dynamic properties of the rope, and the condition of the tree, those pieces could have been tied off at the porty and there was 0% chance of tree or rigging failure. If you don't know that, then you've got a lot to learn.

And when it comes to learning, criticism is fine, even if it is mistaken criticism. Verbal bashing is quite another thing. But please don't contrue anything I've written as a threat. I go to great lengths to not harm others, becasue I understand the law of karma.

But its out of my hands. Dave may have to look the person, he treated so disrepectfully, in the face on day. I'll do nothing to encourage or discourage that. Nor will I show this thread to the groundman, but he'll probably read it anyhow.
