Todays Job. Poplar Rigging!

Todays job, could have done with Allmark and his new monster to get us out of trouble. Never mind, we managed.

Anyhow, I think we did well today with only 3 of us, trying to make the most of our work ethics and equipment. Making work video’s, to me at least, can definitely provide a positive distraction from a sometimes miserable job. Today seemed to fly by.

. Enjoy the film, about 8 minutes duration.

Textbook skills, Reg.
Snazzy camera work. It`s like I was there.

I noticed the first limb appears to catch the guttering. Are you sure your rope man knows what he is doing ?

I'm making vids in wmv format reg coates I also use google as my host provider.. The cam records in mpeg4 format but man is is laggy.
What I would have liked to see was the panning up of the large leaders you were rigging out. Folks dont know the immense weight that we commonly deal with. I still dont know how you compiled so much good stuff in one post.

Also, what attachement was used on your helmet cam? I almost drilled into my petzl last week but did not.

We did had quite a sunny week back in May Sean, what more do you want?

The footage wasn’t taken on a helmet cam. The camera sits in a case which is strapped across my chest. A smaller second strap also runs through the case and then around the back of my neck to keep it in position. The case has a hole in the front so the lens can pop in and out, and zips open at the top so I can access the buttons.

You’ll notice the first third of the climbing footage is missing from the film because I mistakenly had the camera on picture mode, so I was actually taking pictures when I thought I was shooting footage. Although it was much the same thing as what is on the rest of the video.

I have tried a head-cam before, but I found it quite annoying and uncomfortable to have under the helmet. I took it off after an hour, although it was a particularly warm day.

The drawback's with the chest set-up is that the camera doesn’t automatically follow your line of sight and is sometimes obstructed by your ropes. Benefits are – it’s a cheap option, the footage doesn’t come out too jerky, easy to access the stop/start button and doesn’t get in the way while your working.

Videos are good so long as its convenient. However, I do wish more members could find the time to record and post some of their tasks. For me, its always bonus to be able to watch as well as read about what others are up to across the globe.

Or perhaps I just need to get out more!

Good comments Reg.

I had my wife watch that first cut as the tops are diving earthward trailing their ropes cuz I told her "thats what it looks like up there".

She winced.

Cory, if I'm lucky I might get a yawn out of may wife!

Try it again Canuck, at first it wouldn't work for me either.

Jamin_Mayer: If you removed the top handle and mounting then I suppose it would work, never tried it though.

Did I see a groundman snedding out with a top handled saw!?

I got the job I need the block driver for 007 - some nice heavy sweet chestnut about 30" through over a roof, not this ponsey poplar rubbish.

Nice job, apart from doing a poplar in the wind and rain part : ) Clever way of using the camera!

Got a cold week with clear skies and northerlies this week though. Probably a frost tonight. Nice weather for tree work.
