That rope looks pretty dry...I really like the way every rope is unravelled and has inline knots.

The knots are there to keep the rope from unraveling.

Where does one find sweet gear like that?

[/ QUOTE ]

Most the time you can find them at estate sales when the old timers garage is cleaned out - saves a ton of cash!

Re: Today\'s drive-by removal

The large aluminum pulley is used by utility companies to roll new cable when they're building power/cable lines. I bet that was stolen/fell off a utility truck.

when I have my 'old timer's garage sale' the quality of gear will be just a bit higher...doesn't mean that it will sell for any more though.

You may get more if the pink spray paint comes off!

That would diminish the value. A copy of the Beatle's 'Please, Please Me', signed on both sides by all four just sold for over $14k...pink gear may appreciate too!

Re: Today\'s drive-by removal

Great photoessay Tom. Ought to keep them for a talk sometime. I caught a guy one time using 5r/8 manilla for a bull ling in a Norway Spruce. He had a lineman's pickle tied to the end as a terminal attachment point. HO was a professor at a large ag university and didn't know the wiser. Always amazed at what you can run into with weekend warriors.

Re: Today\'s drive-by removal

This afternoon on the way home from work I was listening to an interview on Fresh Air with a fellow who wrote a book about food. He was talking about frying foods and using oil. Very interesting. During the interview Terry Gross said that she liked all of his descriptions. His reply centered on what anyone who cooks knows...but he talked about 'recognition'.

That is what is missing from HOs who may be smart and successful in one part of their lives but they fail to recognize failure when they hire tree cutters, in our case.

Some people have a good sense of recognition, like some of the comments on this thread. Also, what my friend said. She didn't know nor could she describe what was wrong, but, she recognized 'something'.

I might print out this thread and bring it to the HO. Probably not, but if I do I'll try to contact the tree cutter. It might be a teachable moment...or not :(

Re: Today\'s drive-by removal

Wow! I work on the utility side of tree work and can say those folks are beyond hacks. We could have pallets of those pulleys but we choose to use the real thing. Thanks for sharing the pics.

I wish that I would have asked the HO how much he paid for the work. Also, who did the work.

When bad setup is obvious to some people, like my friend, why isn't it as obvious to HOs?! Are they blinded by small dollar signs?
