Today....

You know they say treework is dangerous but today taking the transmission out of my bucket truck with an adapter from Harbor Freight that turns your HF floor jack into a Transmision jack is the most uncomfortable I have been in a long time!

Wow. That does look a bit scary. It also looks like the transmission trouble is pretty easy to spot! I hope it’s not too expensive to fix!

I'd like to know why Reach thinks the trouble is pretty easy to spot and you think it looks pretty bad.

The first thing I'd be looking for is a piece of plywood to put under the jack.

Oh, if this is the insides showing, it does look pretty bad.

I’ve torn down a couple smaller manuals, and those are pretty simple. That one does look bad though, considering the inside is currently on the outside!
Yeah I’m taking to truck shop tomorrow but I’m not too hopeful for this one, it sounded worse than it looks when it blew apart

You’re right @Whinchman my setup was pretty half ass. I’ll get something better going on for the install

Yes, that bearing should be hidden behind the bearing cap that is now broken. It takes a lot to blow out a bearing cap like that, so it’s safe to say that transmission suffered what’s known as a “catastrophic failure.”

My daughter and her friend turn 9 tomorrow.

They have both found that they like chopping kindling.

I had this old painted and rusted head with some of the old handle within.
Some time with the wire wheel, and a piece of plum for the handle.
Made the empress tree sheath today.

About right for two-handed by a 9.y.o. chopping.

That’s great, I love it!

Turned out nice. If you have the time and don't want to run a wire wheel on the head (less paint and metal flying) soaking an axe head in vinegar does a good job of restoration and gives it an etched look. The acid in the vinegar slowly works away at it and the only manual labor is maybe a quick scrub with a scouring pad.

Here is an axe head that I used a vinegar soak on. Due to the etching, you can see the hardened steel on the edge vs the softer steel of the head.
