Today....

Some days karma looks favourably upon you. Happened to me twice this week.

Scenario 1

Pulled up to a job yesterday that had been on my schedule for a few weeks. Nothing crazy, but a solid $1000 job that I felt I could pound out in 4-5 hours and call it a day. Carrying my gear back to where the tree was supposed to be and all I see is a log laying on the ground and the stump beside it. Immediately turn around and see the homeowner glaring out at me from the back door. I didn't even pause as I walked past him and said "you could have called and said it was done". I don't care if you find someone cheaper or who can do it sooner. What I do care about is you wasting my time and screwing up my schedule. He's been blacklisted.

So as I'm sitting in the truck going through unscheduled jobs that could be done anytime, trying to fill the day, my phone rings. The heavy rains the day before had cause a Mani to uproot and lay itself across their neighbour's roof and they needed it cleaned up ASAP. Good thing my day had opened up, because the customer and neighbour were so pleased with the work I did getting the tree off the roof that they both hired me to do some other work around their properties.

Scenario 2

Had a big dead elm removal today that was easy enough except for one one long, large twisty limb hanging over the neighbour's garage/yard and also tangled in the neighbouring trees. When I quoted the job it was the only thing stopping it from being a straight flop. Showed up and noticed the limb no longer there. A quick peek over the fence showed it had snapped off and was laying in the neighbour's yard (with thankfully no damage to anything). So now it was a straight flop and it gets better. The neighbour came over and said he didn't even want the limb cleaned up. He wanted the wood for his firepit so just asked if I could cut it up for him. Yahtzee!

Doesn't grow so well up in northern Minnesota. Wife got a plant about 20 years ago and talked me into building a massive arbor out of cedar logs to support the weight of the Wisteria. 20 years later the stem is no biller than a #2 pencil and it probably weighs less than a pound. In the mean time the Engleman Ivy has taken over the arbor, my outdoor shower and most of my screen porch. That stuff I could do without.
That is a pretty impressive Wisteria though.

About 5 years ago we had a spring where the pine, oak and wisteria pollen hit at the same time. On breezy days when you walked outside it was like getting covered in talcum powder.

Same thing up here about 2 or 3 years ago. A relative sent me a photoshopped pic of a gent on his riding mower with a small snow plow attached to the front, clearing his driveway. The white snow was altered to yellow to look like pollen. Had to say it was pretty funny.

Whew! That lead is hung!
It made it feel safe but the challenge of getting the last bit unstuck was a lucky. It turned as I cut the second side of the fork and pulled the grcs Up the tree yikes! It kinda slouched down into the next crotch but with a big pull and a second rig point we were able to get it down- a picture of it precariously sitting on this limb after it moved the grcs

Yes, much butt puckery to be had that day. I know the feeling. I’ve scooted my Hobbs a couple times and I probably didn’t poop for a couple days each time.

Glad you got it down safe and glad you got down safe. Nice work.

Got to prune a Sycamore Maple, prune a Honeylocust for an upcoming solar install, reduce a pretty well beat up Silver Maple, and take out an old trunk next to it. The old trunk was extremely rotten and wrapped in multiflora rose and bittersweet vines. When I made the stump cut I was amazed at how mushy it was.

Saturday sidejob. Mulberry was shading the roof, and the solar company used a drone to draw the line through the tree where they said it would open up enough light. I explained how these trees grow, but they really wanted to keep as much of it as they could, so the customer got what they wanted and were happy. No lift, no heavy equipment. Just a guy on a rope. It was a fun one.
