Toba Inlet job, pic heavy.

I know you're new to BC, so I'll let you in on a localism: We complain about everything. Don't get confused by it.

[/ QUOTE ]

It wasn't that long ago that you were a transplant to BC one way or another. Pointing at other provinces as the cause for political differences, now that's ignorant.

I'm not sure that you understood my point: Any event or project in BC will always be complained about by a vocal opposition, more so than in much of the rest of the country. I'm not 'pointing at other provinces' negatively in any way...
And I was born here in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere on the coast.

My point is that as a "Canadian" from a small town, any event or project in Canada will always be complained about by a vocal opposition, frequently muddied by the "Local factor" and popularized as being a "Local/Provincial issue".

You aren't special.

Gord, thanks for the wonderful reply back, I have wiped my ignorant tear away just for you. You have officially become the first resident of BC that I have talked to that is in favor of having our public rivers and resources sold to and raped by massive private FOREIGN company's to benefit them and the liberal government here in BC.

You say it is "green energy" but many don't see it the same as you. Green doesn't involve damming and diverting (up to 90% of its flow AKA Ashlu river) wild rivers, using pallets upon pallets of explosives or cutting down old growth forests. You mentioned how only a 40' ROW will be cut. Will they be flying the electricity out or cutting hundreds of miles of transmission lines through the whopping less than 1% of old growth forests remaining? Just curious...

You also didn't mention that these power projects are not needed by the people of BC as we already make enough power and sell it as well. You didn't mention that once our power is privatized our rates will blow through the roof. How about how the only jobs they will provide will be short term and temporary, such as your last 10 day stint in the bush. How about how they will destroy our world renown fishing and ecotourism industry. You didn't mention the detrimental effects dams and diverting rivers have on all fish populations whether they be anadromous or resident, spawning above or below waterfalls, or how dams increase river temperatures and siltation, all of which are detrimental to already fragile and dwindling runs of fish.

You say it is better than our other choices, one of being nuclear. I personally think that clear cutting a new site and building a nuclear plant is greener, being that it only affects that one small area, which is also not in the middle of prime untouched wilderness. Transmission lines will not have to be cut through old growth forests for hundreds of miles as there is no need to send electricity to the middle of wilderness areas as no one lives there. The waste can also be contained. How about harnessing the power of tides? Shown to have relatively minimal impacts on marine life.

As arborists and people generally caring of our environment we NEED to be speaking out against horrible projects like this and not be fooled by it being masked as "green energy". If you want Gord, maybe we can head up to Toba inlet and have this conversation in person. Oh wait I guess now that RAPE-OF-THE-RIVERS owns it we would have to be authorized personnel to have access to the ONCE CANADIAN rivers up there. Now give your ignorant head a shake and wake up and smell the coffee man!

Please enjoy these informative films. Please spend the 10 minutes to watch them in full. Thanks all, Zach

That and 1 handers just for the sake of getting rad. You is gonna get bit one day yo.

This will be my last post in this thread regarding the political side of the Toba Inlet power project. If anyone wants to discuss it further, start a thread in the Tree Free Zone.

I'd just like to point out a few things, and please note that I am not at all pro-privatization or overly pro-Liberal or anything else. My feeling is only that these projects have gotten more negative press than they deserve.

Hi all, been lurking for a bit now and thought I would offically sign up. Awesome board, already learned a ton browsing these forums. I'm from Ontario and moved out to BC last year after finishing Arboriculture at Fleming College to work for BC Plant Health Care and loving it. Doing a bunch of rec climbing too on weekends as well as getting into the competitions...tons of fun!

Hi again all. This will be my last post on the topic as well. This is a very hot topic in BC right now as much of it has been done behind the public's back and against our will. The Ashlu project was voted AGAINST 8 to 1 yet still went through? The liberal government went ahead and brought in bill 30 stripping municipalities and stakeholders rights away so they could approve this project. I have personally been up to the Ashlu to see the devastation and rape that occurred and is now going on at Toba, and it is nothing more than resource rape, public scam and BLACK energy at its finest, all for the financial benefit of a select few governmental officials and major foreign company's. Nothing new to expect from our corrupt Liberals. We are having our most precious natural resources sold away at rock bottom prices, with VERY little or NO benefit to the people of BC.

We could go on and on about nuclear plants as well but I will just raise one or two quick points. The plant itself would cause very little environmental damage and ruin very little habitat. Also the waste is containable, therefore would not harm humans or wildlife. The mine needed to extract the resources to power the plant would not be taking our valuable water resources nor would it be destroying ecosystems ( minimal anyways, what lives a mile in the ground?) ecotourism ,recreation or wilderness areas. I have also read on another forum (not a concrete source) that California has just banned the import of power from rape-of-the-river projects. Reason being: energy is too dirty, environmental impact is too high. If anyone would like anymore info on the topic please feel free to PM me. Thanks
