to the resque (a cat)

Got me a call at 5 pm to get a cat out a tree. It was upthere for 10 days already. fireman couldnt get there. So in heavy wind i climbed up. Then i see the top is damaged by a ripped off codominant some years back. Nice regrowth callus and like a hollow tube for 1meter length. mm, got to get higher. So i roped down, climbed a oak 10 meters from that cattree, made a primory anchor and swung over to that cattree. I had to climb about 4 meters past that damaged part up to ø5cm tops. My prime TIP was horizontal at that point. Darn nasty to climb in those strong windguts. (messured force 10 at moments, continues wind at 5) So i was swepped around up there for 15 minutes before the cat was calm enough so i could grab his neck skin. Then it was easy, put it an basket and lower it. At last i AGAIN lost my rope guide in that TIP. Needed a other 5 minute climb to retrieve it /forum/images/graemlins/9lame.gif

lots of pics taken so i hope i get one off them in mail....

Very cool...I have wondered about doing this...actually talked about it with my son earlier today.

Do you have the owners sign any kind of waiver? What if the cat bails out from 60 feet when you try to grab it...or you drop it? /forum/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Do you charge to do it?

MMM, I did rescue some cats from owners that wanted to pay. I just accepted some bottles of wine or a good meal /forum/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. If they call and want me to show up during workhours they are charged regular fee. If they have the patience to wait after 5pm (the cat does;)) its a 'gift'. Only when its far driving (+20km) and/or tollfee ill ask for fuel cost and expences. I thing at doing this 4-5 times a year so far billing this work is not in order. Just if i need to show up in workhours ill charge. About a waiver, maybe a smart thing but i always talk it over with the owners what i will do and what can happen. I also ask how much lives that cat already has spent /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif And for bailing out from 60feet, all cats i got out were at least 5 days or longer up. They didnt show any fear or agression and with kind approach and grabbing the neck skin they were very easy to handle. Just make sure that when grabbing it you can clamp that cat against the chest or have a basket ready. First time i grabbed a cat i had to one handed make a good TIP to lower myself with cat. So be sure you can easily descent after grabbing.

The last cat I rescued would not let me grab him. The beast ripped my arm to shreds. So The owners got a huge blanket spred it out and I shook the beast free. It fell around 40' landed perfectly in the blanket. While trying to get the beast out of the blanket it got free and ran up another tree. It was dark by then so I went home. Next morning at first sunlight I got it with a net.

Great line. /forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Thanks for the info.

tod_K...that is the scenario I wonder about...the only cat I ever messed with in a tree was about 15 years ago and he was not happy. I had a laundry basket and got him in it...I don't know HOW I kept him in it but it all worked out. Haven't done one since.

I have heard of sewing a welding glove into a bag, grab the cat and pull the bag around the cat. I envision one Pi$$ed off cat at that point.

They say, "Don't let the cat out of the bag"...maybe it was a tree climber/rescuer that had just touched down with a bagged cat that said that the first time. /forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use a lobster snare and get them around the neck. Next I stuff them into a duffle bag, loosen the snare, and lower them to the ground.

Good idea...keepin' 'em at arm's length sounds pretty good.

i've been up after a few, my only good outing i used a thick pillow case and a good pair of leather gloves /forum/images/graemlins/icon14.gif on another outing, i chased a cat out onto a limb that was too small for me..... i asked the pet owner what she wanted me to do.... she asked me what her choices were, and i told her that either i could come down without the cat, or i could shake the cat out of the 65' high limb that it was hanging onto for dear life...... i still don't know if the cat's back legs were prminatly immobile, but that was an interesting ride to the animal clinic.

p.s. the cat falling was about 10 years ago when i first started climbing, i doubt that i would do the same thing today!

I've rescued all kinds of stuff. This lil pisser was a surprise to me last week (see attachment).

THOOOSSE bad boys can be awesomely scary when they are cornered. They hiss like a cobra and bare their fangs like a tiger. Removed one from a small utility room once...scooped it onto a shovel to move it...expected it to rush up the handle and kill me any second. I can't imagine being in a tree with one!! /forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forum/images/graemlins/obsessed.gif

hey guys,
the possums we have down here are prity nasty too, there a import from Australia and grow about twice the size and twice as angry as over in Aussy. We had some interesting situations with possums running out of cavitys in trees.
Couple of months ago we had a instance in a big poplar with two possums vs 2 climbers.
One possum ran up towards one of the boys and straight into the path of a steel capped work boot.
Lets just say and the boot connected the possum flew up above the tree and sailed to the ground.
It sat there for a few moments obviously wondering if it was still alive and then fled into the bushes, A good 15-20 metres of freefall, now thats prity tough. It would be good if we could handle a good fall like that.
