To sell or not to sell.....

In October I shot a video of Jeff Perry topping a large dead pine tree. He posted the video on facebook and since then it has had over 5 million views. A few companies have approached me about selling them the rights to the video to use in advertisements. Does anyone have experience with this? Was it good or bad, any recommendations? On one hand I think why not if it gets the video out? Let's see what happens. I really don't have any experience with this sort of thing. Thanks!

In some cases you can sell the rights to use the video, but never sell the exclusive rights to any piece of art. It's complicated and I don't understand it. My wife was looking in to this when she was asked to illustrate a children's book series, with the goal of commercializing it, characters based on her images, video games, advertisements, and potentially toys. In the end it was too complicated.. You need a solid contract, and lawyers involved...

I'm FB-less, too! What's the deal Landon? Was it a shot that you may have showed us in Japan?

What are we talking about for coin? That would have all of the influence on my decision if you ask me......

Ha ha! So I sold it! This is awesome. Oceans, I think I may have shown you guys, it is the video of Jeff wedging over a big top around 100' up and I am filming from a taller tree behind. The deal is I get 40% of all revenue generated and they try to use the video anywhere they can. I'm not super attached to the video and I like that it gets out and viewed by tons of people. I figure why not. My major request is that there is a credit page so mine and Jeffs names are attached to it. What I've learned so far is if you have a cool video put a watermark or something on it so people know it's yours. This video was just filmed on my phone, I had know idea people other than tree guys would be into it. Thanks for all the input. As soon as they get their version credited I'll post it.
