throwline storage

does anyone use anything out of the ordinary for throwline storage? a guy i work with didn't feel like spending the money for a falteimer and used a pizza box for throwline and the sauce compartments for weights. this got me thinking that i should try something new. i have a falteimer, two of the sherrill versions, and a few of the mesh fold & hold cubes, but the best that i have found are hyper products collapsible dog food bins. sierra trading post sells them and they are cheap and fit well into a rope bag.

Faltheimer is the only way to fly!

A pizza box!?

Thats funny!, but yet creative!

If I were on the crew I'd be pretty disappointed if another crew member broke out a pizza box filled with throwline.

hey bearclimber, welcome to the buzz, as far as creative storage ideas, ive used buckets, folding buckets, sticks, and other ideas, but the folding cubes are by far the best ive used, they fold up nice and compact and yet create a large opening for stuffing the line back into it, as far as the pizza box goes, no thank you, come the first throw in the morning when the dew is still on the grass that box wont hold up too well in taller grass, creative yes but durable, not so much

We use 5 gallon bucket for 2 of our throw lines and a little smaller one for our 3rd. I like it lines comes out with no problem. They stack well and we put all our pulleys on top as well so they don't take up to much space they actually create another storage area. We mounted a water cooler holder on the inside of one of the storage doors and keep the buckets in that so when the door swings open they are right there for you to grab. Kinda nice.

Only down side is sometimes hard to separate when the top one has a lot of stuff in it. and also they aren't nearly as compact as the cubes, but like i said we just sorta use them as another storage area for the pulleys.

I have used the collapsable cubes and I don't like them..seems like i'm the only one. I use a wheel that was meant for rolling up extension cord. It costs 5 bucks at a hardware store. The throwline spools on it. When i want to use it, I pull off approx. how much I need and have at it. When I want to stow my throwline, I reel it in just like i'm fishing. Its perfect and doesn't get tangled at all. I've run into tangle with the cube as bights of throwline get caught on themselves after you give it a toss. Thats from my expereince though, with how many people rave about the foldy cubes, I'm starting to think my problem with it is operator error. But I will say, I have had several coworkers see me use the wheel and switch over to it so that has to count for something.

I agree 100%. I switched back to cord reels last year after trying lots of other methods. Cubes worked OK but if they got tossed around in the truck a few times I'd find tangles. Line Tamer and gallon jug worked the best IF the line was dry and there were fresh batteries in the LT and so on and so on. It may have been a coincidence, but I used the same line and weight all last year until the last job when they decided to spend the winter living in the top of a maple tree.

I tried mine wraped around a stick, a 5 gallon bucket, and a large buckingham bag. Have to say the best so far is the folding cubes. Have a co-worker who uses a cardboard box as well! Interesting to say the least!!

I have a buddy who took a log, drilled n a lag into one end, cut the "J" off of it, and when he wants to spool the throwline, puts the protruding part of the lag into the drill chock and drills the line onto the log....it goes fast, but takes a more gear....namely a drill

I am also a Flateimer fan. I have had mine for almost 2 years with NO problems.

We have a guy here who uses an empty Sam Adams 12 pack, when it gets rough he just brings in another and runs his old one through the chipper!

That's what I call recycling!

Do many of you use the line tamer much? I have one and use it some but it would be much more useful if you could attatch it mid throwline instead of just on one end??
